Anyone have IMR SR 4759 in their QuickLoad powder library? My bootleg version does not and I'd like to find data for that powder in the 357 Maximum case and 180gr JHP bullets.

Thanks, Dinny

It's not in the V 3.9 database

Nope, it's not there...but, according to a burn rate chart I've looked at, 4759 falls right between ADI AR2205 and VV N120. Another chart I have, and I cannot vouch for its origins, indicates that AR2205 is an equivalent to the 4227s. All four of those powders are grouped together. Maybe that will give you some kind of idea where to go with it.

The Speer 11th manual shows .357 Maximum with a 180-grain TMJ starting load of SR 4759 at 16.0 grains and a max load of 18.0 grains.

Thank you!

Glad to hep you out, even if in just a small way Dinny.

I overlooked that Speer manual. The velocities are still a bit fast considering they shot them from a 14" TC barrel and I have a H&R 22" barrel.

I'm trying to find a replacement for Viht Tin Star. With 9.0gr and a MP Molds 200gr LHP bullet I obtain 1159fps from my 22" barrel.

I may need to look at A2400 to see if a reduced load will get me closer to the 1100fps mark.

Thanks, Dinny

I think that might work, but you may end up with lots of fouling with light loads in such a large case. W231 comes to mind, but if I didn't have any I might give W244 a try. I've never used it, but I believe it's supposed to burn cleaner than 231 based on reading a bit of ad copy.

I wish you luck!

Ken Waters often preferred IMR 4227 to 4759 for his cast loads. If you check his data you will see that both powders are very close in Grains per velocity in Cast loads. 4227 is available though expensive nowadays. Good luck!

You can see back in 1983 that they were very close to the same burn rate. 1983 was a much simpler time.

Thanks! I have some 4227 and will give it a serious look.
Posted By: RiverRider Re: QL + IMR SR4759 - 11/13/22
The problem with the 4227 choices is that in order to keep velocity down to around 1100 fps, you'll have to tolerate very low pressures resulting in about 65% of the charge being consumed. I think that will lead to significant inconsistency...but admittedly, I've never tried such a thing. I have no idea how 4759 would fare, but I suspect it wouldn't be much better.

Tin Star and Trail Boss would be what you need, IMO. It's a shame that you're not likely to find either anymore.

I would agree with RiverRide, while IMR 4227 and SR-4759 were adequate powders in the charge range already mentioned. Trying to use 4227 to get down to 1100 fps would not be a good choice, IMO.

Trail Boss achieved excellent accuracy with my LHPs but velocity maxed out at 920fps. Not even my 30:1 alloy would expand reliably in wet newspaper at that speed. That's why I made the switch to Tin Star. It would seem finding a suitable replacement might be challenging. I will double check my load notes to see if I tried Red Dot. It might work.

Thanks, Dinny

Lil gun 13.5-16 grains will get you there with about 65% case fill.
9-10 grains CFE Pistol 65-70% fill
11-12 grains AA7

Thanks Swifty! I have CFE Pistol and Lil Gun.

IMR 4759 was discontinued several years ago, even before that availability was sporadic it was only made in periodic runs from time to time.

David Bradshaw may have some input, he was a major part of the Max.
I have some loads that used a 170 cast and deep seated. They shot great out to about 125 then went to totally hopeless after that, shot out of a revolver.
