After a river duck hunt last Sunday, dang dog came down with an ear infection. $220 later...need to watch this closer I guess. Clean and dry after hunts. Any other suggestions? French Britt by the way.

I use to pour some hydrogen peroxide in my Goldens ears. she would get grass thistles in her ears---seemed to help get them out along with all the other crap.

Trim hair around the ear hole for good air circulation. Once healed flush with otic solution as soon as you can detect that smell, if not part of regular grooming, to get ahead of it.

Thanks!

My setters often had this problem, it is not uncommon with long eared dogs. I rinse out the ears with an over the counter ear cleaner for a couple of days after the dogs get wet whether swimming, rain, or dew.

This is pretty much weekly during hunting season and spring when the snow melts. The rest of the year I'll clean the ears once every couple of weeks.

I had a Lab that was very prone to ear infections. Regular cleaning and drying with ear powder greatly helped the problem. Be sure to do the cleaning and ear powder treatment every time the dog gets their ears wet.

Had a lab that was prone to ear infections. Turned out to be allergies. After talking it over with my vet I stopped feeding red meat table scraps and the ear issues went away.

All good stuff. Thanks again.

My Brittany has food allergies and had ear infections all the time.

I finally changed the food from pro plan to blue freedom type with lamb potatoes and peas... and he hasn’t had an infection since.

I also trim the hair around the bottom of the ears for better circulation but that didn’t help when I was feeding pro plan, and I went from regular pro plan to sensitive skin, chicken, beef, ... then finally figured out it was chicken & Corn causing the issue...

Equal amounts,
White vinegar
Alcohol,
Water.

The vinegar affects ph Making it an inhospitable environment
For yeast. The most common problem.

The alcohol promotes drying. Helps overall ear health.
Especially in folded over ear dogs.

The water dilutes the solution to make use more comfortable,
And easier.

Flush ears after dog gets wet. If you find them stinking, or
looking a bit bad, clean them with cotton wipes and solution
3 time daily for a week.

Recipe and directions from our vet.
Great guy. He could have sold us something,
instead he gave us this.

My boy gets a little nippy with the otic I got from the doggy doc! He is really freaking sensitive about his ears. Always has been, not just from this. Adds an extra little wrinkle to the challenge. He doesn't really bite, but pretends like he might.

My Britt didn't like it either, and the stuff from the vet was mild and buffered. Boric acid to lower pH to a microbe unfriendly level and a microbicide IIRC. He didn't mind so much if I had it in my pocket for a while and it was nice and warm. Larry would get a big hug to hold him steady and a good ear rub, his favorite things, so it wasn't such a big deal.

Boxer (The real Dillon) would grit his teeth when we cleaned his
sore ears. Never showed any aggression, but it was intimidating.

Now if they need cleaning, my wife does it without any
trouble.
He would never bite Mom.

My Boykin has a lot of ear problems, especially after swimming. I use drops after he’s been in the water and if I see him scratching at his ears or if they begin to smell. The vet also recommended white vinegar if we didn’t have drops, but that never seemed to work for him. It was very persistent at first and then went away after a round of antibiotics, now it only comes back occasionally and true drops will rid him of the infection until he gets wet again.
