Carl, Dom, Pete, where are you ???

Started with some feral cat and fox stalking ... taking the opportunities to learn things to the kids about games, tracks, prints, hunting or simply lying on the ground in the dark night and admire the stars in the sky ...

The ruger number one and the TSX's worked pretty good. I'm trying to hunt with a treestand but this makes me feel like a piece of drying biltong ...

We have to hunt those so late in the night that even a quality X56 scope is barely not enough to see the target.

WHat's up in your parts of Europe guys ?

Not much on my end - to busy riding my desk...

A boar and two bucks.

Thx for asking and hope all is well.
Go Ruger Go ... smile
Was that a juvenile fox or is that the general size? No matter if it was a juvenile, they grow up and then eat a lot of sheep!
The second one ? Yes it was weaned and hunting alone but it was born this year. A pretty small target for me at such a range.

They aren't problem for sheeps but for small game and birds, and also roe deers fawns when they're just born. We have so many of them ...
Then it was a great shot congratulations. I was trying to compare the size of that one to a jackal. How big do the foxes become when mature?
Adult males weight something like 15 to 30 lbs, as far as i remember those I saw in Nalibia they 're about the same size as jackals, but they don't have their pack chasing big game habit.
Thats very interesting indeed about packs chasing their prey.
Am I wrong about th jackals ?

Very nice.

No, jackals are about the same size. I have not seen them chasing prey as a group because they mainly scavenge or catch small things like insects, mice, birds, rabbits and baby animals.
I saw jackals seriously chasing a springbock in Etosha. I was told they were able to chase wounded, sick or weak big games and track them t'il they can't run anymore.
I will not doubt they can do it in areas where food is scarse, like Etosha. Maybe they also do it over here and I have just not seen it. I have seen a warthog chase a cheetah but that was not because the warthog was hungry!

Have also seen a cheetah chase a jackal. Maybe it was for fun that he chased the jackal or maybe he just did not like jackal. It was funny to see how happy the jackal seemed when the cheetah stopped chasing him.
8 were in the cornfield, 3 of them taken smile

Good job.

it looks like they (the boars ... and the corn fields too grin) are especially (far too much) abundant this year in Wallonia, what about Germany ?
Good average I'd say.

Boar on the right had 80 kg at an age of 18 months - but that is nothing unusual either.
If you want to see same wild boars came in Romania smile

How long do you have to wait to get your licence ?

Was an extremely cold day today in the european capitol city of huting (I mean St Hubert of course) but a very successful drive.

Too bad was away in much too warm place, with some snakes and spiders too...Only shot some roes before leaving for south, from wednesday to friday next week will hunt gams in Savoie. Hope to have some pictures to post.

Enjoyed the pics, topic and desriptions. Wish I knew you boys, wher it was and the rest of the tales.
I do understand the blood ceremony.
Blessings
Not that I'd ever trade the hunting traditions we have here in the United States, but I really dig the way you boys in Europe do it! A European hunt is a must in my book!

agreed, that looks like a grand experience.
Just a little update ... Made a little night stalk and stand hunt last WE, made a double kill in a row with the ruger no1 ... I could have fired at least one more bullet but had only three rounds and wanted to keep one, just in case some mercy kill would have been necessary.

That was a cool night to remember ... grin

Same depressive look as in my kurzhaar's eyes since her season is over grin

What kind of drives do you perform ou there ? Silent drcken or big noisy battues ?
Depends on the predominant species, but the noisy option is more common.
Now it's time to eat all that meat ...

Today's meal: Hare's meat & wild boar fat meat balls (game version of the traditional "vitoulets") and Liege's traditional lapin (read bunny) sauce (vinager, onions and Liege's sirup based sauce).

[Linked Image]

was good smile
Posted By: rattler Re: European 2012-2013 season - 02/02/13
what is "Liege's sirup" guessing yah meant syrup but still not sure what it is.....making Chianti braised chuck steak with mushrooms and carrots served with wild rice for my wife and friends tonight....
[Linked Image]

Orchard fruits made preparation (actually made from appels and pears). U can serve it on bread, pancakes, use it on cold or hot served (strong tarste) cheese (such as "vieux herve") or in sauces such as the traditional "bunny" sauce.

Posted By: rattler Re: European 2012-2013 season - 02/02/13
huh.....no clue what would even be an equivalent here.....but the sauce on your dish looks great and now with an idea on the syrup sounds even better....
I'm pretty sure it's possible to cook something of that kind with maple sirup. It would probably be less dark and lighter in taste but would be good though.
Posted By: rattler Re: European 2012-2013 season - 02/06/13
not exactly sure how you get from apples and pears in your stuff to maple syrup......unless im missing something those are two very different flavors.....actually took the time to look it up, it does have an equivalent here which is the first thing that popped into my mind when you described it, its what we call "apple-butter"....i dont care for the store bought stuff which is often made with dessert apples, the stuff my grandmother made out of tart crabapples was far superior, far more flavor....

got an actual recipe for the sauce you can post up? will give it a try....
I will translate it, if you can give some time for that.

I wasn't meaning the result would be the same with maple sirup but that you could make a sauce of the same kind with it. Different tastes and textures but the result with maple sirup could be interesting and good. I'll try it myself. Sorry if I wasn't clear, I don't use to speak English very often ... Only ET here knows how strange can be my gibberish grin
Posted By: rattler Re: European 2012-2013 season - 02/06/13
no worries, your english is far better than alot of people here that have been speaking it since birth.....no hurry either, not like im sitting on the edge of my seat with the meat ready to go just waiting on the recipe grin

nice pics. were they shot in good old germany ?
Which ones ? Pictures from Germany, Romania and Belgium, here.
Season is eventually never totally Off ...

Friday, about 1 hour before dawn I saw that boar running out of the woods like a cannon ball. He stopped in the meadow in front of me, just under the wind, probably trying to check and spot my scent ... Too bad, he just gave me the time I needed to squeeze the trigger grin
