Unsure as to where I should place this post but I was just wondering where the best places in Finland are for Elk hunting.

Cheers,

James

No elk in Finland. Which one of the above do you want to hunt?
Posted By: acooper1983 Re: Elk Hunting in Finland - 09/28/12
i believe they call elk, what we call moose.
Posted By: Ready Re: Elk Hunting in Finland - 09/28/12
Fins call moose "roosa", Sweds "lg", Germans "Elch".

Nobody anywhere calls moose "elk".

Since Finns have Red Deer, a species so similar to Elk (Wapiti) that debate rages on if both are not same, the mistake might be this.

Hence my question - what does he want to hunt.

Moose?
Red deer?
Roe deer?

Apart from a few introduced whitetails and Santa raindeer -nothing else availabe deer wise in Finland.

What is this if there isn't elk there? It doesn't look like a stag to me, plus you already had a pic of a stag above it in your post.

That is an Elk (Wapiti). There are none of those in Finland.

Included into the list above to find out whether or not OP knew about the difference in phaenotype between reddeer and elk.

It is surprising how confusing this is to people sometimes...
grin

A true good man and hunter, just sharing his knowledge, IMO

But, Carl, aren't you actually a professor ? smile

GV,

long time no talk. Read about your exploits with ET. Outstanding.

Thank you for the promotion. Just researcher/lecturer. Professor is a long ways off - wages wise...

Finns do not have Red Deer...This is Continental Europe pleasure...Finns have White Tail bringed in 1930 I think. They have also Reindeer smile. About Moose finns call it "HIRVI" what in direct translation mean deer.

Moose is most common Finnish game and shooted over 50 000 per year. Good places are south-west and central-north part of Finland...

Norwegians call moose "elg". Probably the source of confusions.

My dogs are known in English as Norwegian Elkhounds. In Norsk, they are Elghunds.

In Sweden "lg" are moose, and what North Americans call Norwegian Elkhounds, Swedes call "grhund" ("grey dogs").

Evidently, we don't want to give the Norwegians too much credit for doing good things, or producing good dogs. grin
