My father recently obtained a 1960 Model 88 in .308 in an estate, and we are beginning to try to determine value. It will be something he will sell.

It is in incredibly good shape. In fact, I almost wonder if it has been refinished, but if it has, an incredibly good job was done. The bluing looks almost too strong and black to me, for some reason; maybe it’s because I’m used to seeing guns of that age with wear. However, the inner parts of the lever mechanism, magazine well, etc. show almost no wear. I’m not an expert, but it honestly just looks like a new gun, not a refinish job.

What, very roughly, would it possibly be worth? I know .308 was by far the most common chambering, so I’m sure that’s limiting.

Thanks!

Pre'64 M/88's in .308 the asking price is around $800.00 +/- depending on condition.

A high condition M88, 308 with an asking price of $1,500.00 sold here in the Classifieds a month ago.

Just my perception but I would think that for $1,500.00 it would have to be a really special rifle. Anymore gun prices don't surprise me, like P.Y. Barnum is reported to have said "there's a sucker born every minute".

As more rifles sit idle in old guys collections, fewer prisitine examples from decades ago are floating around for purchase. When said old guys start pushing daisys supply will once again lower prices.

Supply and demand.

If I was buying I think 800 is in line. If was selling I know you can't get $1500 for a rifle if you are asking $800.

Just sayin

$1500 for a 284, not a 308.

I was referring to a high condition 308 (not 284) that sold here in the Free Classifieds for $1,500.00 on 25 June of this year.
