Did Winchester produce any early m70 rifles with no checkering? I have a 1946 I believe with no checkering on the stock. All the metal fits as it should and the in letting resembles factory. Let me know what you might know. Thank you.
I've never seen or heard of one without checkering. As a guess, I suspect one of the many previous owners may have sanded the stock and refinished it.
That was my first thought to but there is plenty of wood in those areas. An old guy was looking at it and said he remembered them offering some of these but he said this was the third one he had ever seen. So before I use the action for a build I thought I better confirm what I have.
The Marksman Stock used on the National Match and Target Model guns was not checkered.
Have also seen a few aftermarket, replacement stocks without checkering used on some M70’s.
