Could pre-64 model 70's come without checkering or were they all checkered?

The best of my knowledge and a quick peek at my Rodger Rule book only the target type rifles were uncheckered.

160user: I am sure that 1911a1 is including in his "Target type" Model 70's being "uncheckered", the National Match and the Bull Gun models, as well as the Model 70 "Targets".

Thank you. I have a 300 H&H that I am going to sell that is uncheckered and trying to figure out if it is correct or not. There is some reason I have it or thought it was something special I just don't remember what it is.

As far as sporting model 'pre '64' Win 70 genre, it would be 'possible' for a special order gun to have been shipped without checkering. That especially if a 'pre-war' gun when the factory was more 'into' such caterings. That said... Unless some kind of provenance speaking directly to such "order", Occam's Razor firmly decreeing: "aftermarket alteration"!
The "collector value" largely gone. The 'residual value' yet possibly substantial particularly if one of the rare factory barrel variations.

A 'quality shooter' in most any case if properly maintained and otherwise "Bubba's" presumed hand, limited to a decent refinish!
Just my take
Best!

I have pre 64 model 70 in 270 Winchester with no checking. I think it was made in 1952,

serial No is 218,000. I bought it used, so I always thought it was a low cost price point model.

Good news is it is very accurate and has a pretty fast barrel. Just not as fast as my Sako A7

270. With the same load.

Hi GT! Second good news, no 'low cost' model. Almost surely the stock refinished at some point. Sounds like "slick job"! smile Sorry coundn't help that! 270 Win is a great chambering for a great rifle!
Enjoy!
