Three of my five.

Not shown 243 W, 300 H&H BullGun

Love the 2" Unertls.

Veddy nice. All appear to be very early 50's models (50-53), but you don't specify. I love me some target rifles... You should post pics of how well they shoot too. Do you ever shoot them with iron sights? Or do you have the original irons for them? Anyone can shoot good groups with scopes, but it takes a little more skill with irons. Having just had a rimfire shoot yesterday and using my model 52B, reminds me of your cool target rifles pictured. Thanks for sharing..

Very nice.

As target rifles. Do they have anything special not evident in pictures? Such as special bedding, or other parts or modifications?

Nice!!

Rule, p. 178
“Target Trigger. On Target Rifles, special attention was taken to hone and polish the trigger bearing point at the sear. When completed, the trigger was identified, sometimes by a lower case ‘t’, sometimes by the entire word ‘TARGET’ and most often by an upper case ‘T’.”
Posted By: Earlyagain Re: Model 70 Target rifles - 04/25/21
That's spectacular!
They lavished some serious attention back then.

Dug around and found pic of 243 and 300 H&H.

Both now wear 2" Unertls as well.

I had a chance to buy a .220 Swift target model about a year ago that while it wasn't a good deal (price was fair though), the gun was in great condition. I really, really regret not buying that rifle.

Wow, what great rifles!
Posted By: Poconojack Re: Model 70 Target rifles - 04/26/21

Very nice collection of high condition Target Rifles, bet it took awhile to put those together.

The top gun is a mid-60’s Target Rifle. Push feed, chambered for 308 Win., rubber pad and sliding hand stop adjustment rail. Really surprised that BSA mistook it for a early 50’s gun.

Posted By: NYNY Re: Model 70 Target rifles - 04/26/21
Still on the hunt.

Looking for one chambered in this.

Just added another in 30-06. Not factory stock but only paid 3X what the sights are worth.

Very nice. Do you just collect them, or do you also shoot them??

No point in owning a gun you don't shoot.

I imagine your nice Winchesters should do better.. I damned near bought an old Remington 40x competition rifle at our clubs last gunshow, but then again it was a Remington. Had it been a model 70, I probably would have taken it home..

It is sad, even your buddy rost hasn't beaten my iron sight score. Just sayin. I believe he was a camp perry shooter? I may be wrong. You can always step up to the plate, as I've offered before, but I don't think that will happen. A lot of talk though..

Yeah you are a legend alright.. lol.. I have yet to see you go anywhere and shoot besides your secret gravel pit and your local gun club where they have a picture of you at the front gate..their is no doubt you are a pretty good shot, but you are far from the best. The day you sling up or shoot off a bipod and shoot a 600yd match and shoot 200-20x then you will have our attention. In the meantime give it a rest, about guys posting pictures.

nyny: You are new hereabouts so I am going to take it easy on you - this time!
Your bizarre, baseless and overly inclusive statement that "there is NO sense in owning a gun you don't shoot" is not only incorrect it is naive and close to being stupid.
I have a couple hundred guns I don't shoot and they give me great pleasure in owning them and watching them appreciate in value over the years.
I love to buy/chase/trade for guns I have NO intention of shooting!
I have done this for over half a century so far and the fun and pleasure (and pride!) in acquiring these guns is worth so many things to me, personally.
In fact I am headed out today (once my Varminting partners leave town) to check on a collection of Winchesters that have come up for sale - somewhat certain that I won't be shooting ANY of them that I may acquire!
I own guns made by Winchester, Sako, Kimber of Oregon, Colt (both pistols and Rifles), High Standard, Smith & Wesson, Browning, Marlin, Anschutz and Weatherby that I have NO intention what so ever in shooting!
And that fact does not diminish my pride in ownership or their continued appreciation in value.
Again your bizarre statement is just wrong, on so many levels!
If you wish to shoot every firearm you own I say get after it and make yourself happy, but you trying to cast aspersions on those who DON'T shoot every firearm they own is laughable.
Enjoy.
Hold into the wind

What you do is up to you. Just like the guys who have 427 Cobras with 6 miles on them.
If it makes you happy to show them off, rather like having a Renoir in a secret room you only show the elites.
Have a friend who has well over 200 great single shots, 50+ Popes alone. He shoots them ALL as that's what they were built for.
Look at all the major auction houses and see the huge collections of very fine guns being sold off by the relatives of the guy who collected them.
Perhaps if I had a 1 in 1000 NIB, I'd not shoot it, but a 1 in 100 would go to the range and hunting. That would make your's more valuable.
Perhaps you've missed that the prices of Colt and Winchester collectible is falling every year. The younger generation no longer cares.
As for my modest collection of M 70s, they have all been shot and will be as long as I can. If they lose value, it won't be my problem.
Glad you are ensuring the "good life" for those who survive you.

NIB when I got it. Rarest OMM there is. I've put 200 rounds through it.

nyny is not "new" to the campfire. It's Larry Root...
Hey Larry, how's that "lawsuit" against Rick Bin and the campfire going? laugh
Larry Root is Like Mickey Donovan!
Epic, BSA posting AR target pics in a Winchester target rifle thread trying to one up Root...LMAO.

Two of the biggest tools in one place. You have to pay for this entertainment anywhere else.

How the Winchester target rifles shoot? Any accuracy / range reports?
Posted By: ChrisF Re: Model 70 Target rifles - 05/12/21
I'm not an expert on Winchester nomenclature, but functionally the Win M70 Targets were 308 or 30-06 and (300H&H for long range)...because during their run, that's all that was allowed in NRA Highpower Rifle. The 220 Swift, 243 and 270 are more Varmint Rifles in my mind. The 243 NYNY illustrates has no front sight base which is indicative that it was shot with a scope only...another indication that it was not a Highpower competitive rifle.

During my time in Highpower there were terms like "Bull Gun" additionally used, but I was too young to know if it was actual Winchester nomenclature or just highpower slang being used.

Roger Rule is somewhat local to me. I'll have to try to grab him and get up to speed on the Model titles.

Functionality aside, over the years Winchester catalogued pre M70 Target Rifles in .22 Hornet, .250-3000 Sav., .270 W.C.F., .30-06, 7mm, .257 Roberts, .220 Swift, 300 H&H Magnum and .35 Rem.. Heavy Weight Target Rifles were also catalogued in .243 Win. and .30-06.

Bull Guns were catalogued in .30-06 and .300 H&H magnum.

A National Match rifle was catalogued in .30-06.

Thank you Poconojack. I learned something new from you. A friend with a few more years than I said similar. Additional bits; a clip slot was a more reliable indicator of intended purpose. And Winchester was often amenable to doing custom one offs…especially if you were a “name” shooter.

Was out bid last month on M70 22 Hornet Target rifle. 5 grand was a bit too much for me.

Just found M70 "Heavy Varmint Rifle", push feed stainless/synthetic 308.

A m70 Target by another name !

Nice "get." That is a nice configuration, and accurate.. I would be open to adding one of them to my stable.
