My wife picked up this model 54 for me, for my birthday couple weeks back. She saw me looking at it at a gunshow and I said j get it another time. Anyhow it’s a 1930 made model 54 in a 06. It has the period correct Lyman 48W long slide on it. This rifle has not been drilled or tapped on the rear bridge, stock has not been cut, this rifle is all original.

That is a rifle with lots of character, think of the tales that it could tell!

I don't think that the rear sight is original.

The rear sight itself isn’t I need to find a Lyman 6W. But the Lyman 48W is period correct. They did come from the factory with the 48W on them. When they had the 48W on them they had the Lyman 6W on them.

If your stock is factory inlet for the Lyman 48W (looks like it may be) the factory supplied a flat Lyman 12S slot blank in the rear dovetail.
That full buckhorn is a valuable sight.

From what I read the model 54 did not come like that. They came with two types of rear sights if the rifle didn’t come with the Lyman 48W then it had a Lyman 66W rear sight. If the rifle came with the Lyman 48W then it had the Lyman 6W rear sight. The Lyman 12S slot was something Started possibly on the model 54 NRA standard rifles then continued on with the pre64 model 70. Tell me more about this buckhorn sight?

You’re most likely correct about that. I was speaking based on a sample of one, a Hornet, S/N in the 44,000 range with a NRA stock that is factory inlet for the 48W that wears a factory supplied flat Lyman 12S.

Probably in the minority, but I wouldn’t get the gun re-blued. To my eyes perfect as it is.

Same here. It’s got a pile of character as is.

And the bolt has not been bent !

Stith Mount with a Lyman Alaskan would be very cool.

Unfortunately a Stith Mount with a Lyman Alaskan will not work without modifications.

As already said will not work, something Winchester corrected on the model 70’s

Re-bluing that rifle would would make it just another re-blued gun.

Some previous unknown hunter dragged that rifle all over hell an creation and no doubt shot plenty of game with it but still though enough of his well worn rifle to take good care of it.

In many ways it is more interesting than a mint version that never saw the field.

Nice lookin piece. If I was going to change anything it would be the full buckhorn sight and go back to original and that is it. The gun has been there and done that! Nice gun! I have a friend with a 1958 model 70 in 300 H&H in the same condition, well used!

I like it, it’s like most of mine, Old and has character.
Posted By: gnoahhh Re: Model 54 - 05/04/21
Neat rifle. I should look so good if I make it to 90 years of age!
Posted By: 3dtestify Re: Model 54 - 05/12/21
Rare to find a unmolested Model 54, much less with the original sling hooks! Change out the rear sight with a Lyman 6W and your good to go. If the sling can be verified as original issue for that period, its icing on the cake!

The rear sight appears to be a Marble sporting leaf No.71 full buckhorn rear sight. I'm not sure what they are worth these days.

Great rifle with tons of character and unmolested. It is almost as much of a treasure as finding a woman that would buy it for you. Well done sir!
