There is a 1953 Winchester Model 71 in 348 Win at the Local LGS for 2000.00. One dude looked at it and turned it down today. If it is there on Friday I am putting it on lay-away. Teachers aren't dripped in gold and lets go brandon but I am cashing in my personal days because they wouldn't let me hunt this last fall because there were no subs.

I thought the same but look at asking prices for Browning 71’s. One (Original) near me is also $2000 but looks re blued. If I remember correctly I have about $1200 in my 4 digit bolt peep standard. I probably would not take $2k for it.

Not often you catch a good deal up here. Why you think I buy off 24 hour classifieds so much. But when you do catch a deal up here it’s a good. The stainless all terrain I picked couple years back for $600 one that stands out. Recent one pre 64 standard in a 270 for $850. But these don’t come along all the time. Most up here think they are sitting on a pot of gold.

$2k isn’t a smoking deal; but assuming it’s as clean as it looks (and most importantly is all original), I think you’ll be happy you own it.

They are getting hard to find in high condition unless you want to pony up big auction house prices.

An 85% standard rifle around here (Vermont) can be found for $1k with patience. But to find the same rifle in 98%+ for $2k or under would be about impossible in my opinion.

It’s hard to tell in pictures, but the finish looks abnormal. It could be a heavy layer of oil is giving it a strange glossy glare.

My first checks are to be sure the serial number has the gray outline around the digits from where they were struck after the bluing process at the factory and check below the front sight ramp to find the rectangular polishing mark on each side.

That usually helps determine original bluing if in question.

This would be my third model 71. I have one that I bought last year for 1100 that has a scope on one of the weird side mounts in 348-450 AI. I traded four trade fodder hunting guns for a 20 inch model 71 in 348 that was owned and used by Harley King and it is featured in Into Kodiak Country by Fred Bear. Harley is holding it while Fred is skinning the bear.




It is missing a swivel but it is who owned it and how it was used that makes it interesting.

I bought another Pre-64 Model 70 standard in 270 win with a 3-9 Leupold that was also owned by Harley that was made in 1953 for 650.00 last year.

I understand buddy. When I look at this rifle it makes me regret not buying the one I saw recently for $2,200.00 it was a long tang first year (4 digit serial #) deluxe with bolt peep. It was very clean, all original and beautiful. Nicely cut checkering and well cared for. Not bad for a rifle made almost 90 years ago.. One of my buddies bought his '51 standard for $500.00 on the Oregon coast. Its a beautiful rifle as well and shoots 3/4" 3 shot groups, as did the 1937 deluxe model I bought for $900.00. That 71 used to be pretty damn popular in Alaska, from what I hear.

That’s a very interesting looking 71! Looks like the receiver was case hardened and the mag tube was swapped for a longer version?
