I just picked a 57 Fwt. I need to get some scope mounts. I was thinking about getting some Talley lightweight lows. I dont have the rifle on hand to measure the rear hole spacing. Are they spaced .860"?

SnK makes a righteous and classy mount for the pre-64, You should look into it...

Not too many here run the lightweights on the pre 64 but if that's what he wants then what's wrong with it? Not my first choice either. Kenneth is right, check out some of GSSP's rifles and mounts. The S&K's and conetrols are the catz azz if you can afford them. I'm running the steel talleys on my fwt's at the moment but that can always change :






The steel talleys are tough as nails but kind of heavy. OP, let us know if you go with the lightweights.

The steel Talleys have some resemblance of class,

but the lightweights just look so lego-like..

Don't get me wrong, I have lightweights myself, for certain rifles with a lightweight motive their very functional...

But a Pre-64, hubba hubba, Lets show some class....

Kenneth, I knew exactly what you meant. Just didn't know if the OP would. I run the lightweights on my classics and newer SC rifles like my EW and new fwt's....I know what you mean by blocky look...but for some reason they don't look too bad on a nice stainless rifle.

Well the rifle isn't a mint condition collectable. I can't afford to spend $100-150 to mount a scope anyway. On my other Model 70 i use Leupolds. So i thought i would give the Talleys a try. Thanks for the opinions.

Keystoneben, I use the low Leupold dual dovetails on mine, they look good, don't block the ejection port at all, and clear any scope below 40mm. If you want 40mm or bigger, go to the mediums. Also, they are very strong and somewhat affordable. Never had a scope lose zero that could be attributable to the mounts.

I agree with old70, the Leupold DD's look pretty good and they are strong bastids....They won't cost an arm and a leg either...

I too do not like the base to overhang the receiver opening. The dual dovetails are your best bet for the money. The Conetrol's do look pretty nice though.

Those conetrols look a lot bulkier than the S&K's.....You are right about the DD's (dual dovetail). I run those on my newer model 70 fwt and they work pretty good:



They'd work on a pre 64 just as well...

Lows will likely cause interference between the scope and bolt handle.

Hmmmmm,,,am I going to have to take my mounts and stuff off and throw some talleys on so the op has a picture to see if it will work??? I have a shoot today but when I get back.......to be continued..

Yeah but the S&K's hang over and tend to run a bit taller. I like them on my FN though.



That said I am liking the bases made by Michael Scherz for the Talley rings. I have a set on my pre-64 M70 358 and a couple of more sets coming for an FN and a M70 Safari 416 Rem. Unfortunately I do not have a close up. Low, elegant and beautifully machined.

If the bases are tall enough even the lowest rings will work.

Talleys on my 61/270

This is off the original topic, but not too far. I just set up my 1946 M70 in 30-06 with an old Bausch & Lomb Baltur 2.5X scope with B&L adjustable mounts. The mounts are a bit of a hassle when sighting in, but the old B&L scopes are nice and clear. This one has a post and crosshair reticle.
