Can someone try and explain what action the FN made bolt gun is made on? McMillan says that they have inletting for M70 Super Short action but they aren't familiar with the FN USA (Ultra Short Action) that FNH used in their .223 bolt gun.

Not sure I want to go with that rifle if inletting a stock is going to be a nightmare.
The gun is based on the wssm actions, I like the Houge stock they come in, 1 in 9 twist, Shot one and really wanted to buy it but Ive 2 bolt 223 Winchester 70's in 223 rem already.Neat little guns! v best winpoor
So if I were to ask for a WSSM inletting the FN rifle would fit?
Im not a 100%, but Iread an article when they came out and shot one a couple years later, looked jusst like a 223wssm truck gun as far a action size. vbest winpoor
This article leads to that same idea.

Are you going to be able to find reloading components for the short fat little thing???? If not, start looking for a .223 rem instead.. JMHO..
It is s .223 rem
FN marked it as an Ultra short action in the .223 variant. From what I could find winchester only made 3 sizes in the action so I don't think they would reinvent the wheel just for a .223rem action. If I call FN I'm hoping they will tell me what action it is. If I can't get a stock inlet for it it's game over the that rifle.
WSSM, so it seems... Push feed and MOA trigger to boot... I've seen them sell for $600-$700.00...
My M70 HV in .223 is based on a regular short action spacing, but the scope base is from a WSSM model spacing. The mag box has a spacer in the back to accommodate the shorter round and bolt travel. Similar to the older long actions chambered in short action calibers.

Measure your bolt spacing and see if it matches up with either of the three listed at the bottom of this page:

Is the gun in the green Houge soft stock now? How many rounds down tube, I may be interested in it if you pass or dont like it, It makes for a good truck gun!v best winpoor
It is in the green Houge stock.

I talked to FN yesterday and they did confirm it is built on the Winchester Super Short Magnum action.

Is this the gun? v best WinPoor
That's it.
CDNN used to have a lot of wssm stocks cheap! v b winpoor
I had a Coyote lite stock I loved except for the "Buick" cooling holes! v b winpoor
I'm trying to justify the gun VS odd action size ect. over a standard short action .243 vs 22-250
I may be wrong but I think the gun we are talking about has the real Winchester trigger, not the MOA deal! v best winpoor
It's looking like I will be thinking hard about getting this gun VS a more weight friendly brush gun. It is the same system as my other hunting guns so I like that idea. Ughhhhh
I'm thinking of tossing in the towel as the FN TSR as a .223 utility set up.

The scope mount holes are not the same as standard M70 and even the low rings seems to get the scope too high for non 50mm bell size.

The FN .223 is just not a hunting utility type set up no matter how hard I try and make it be one smile
It comes with a mil spec rail, the ones I looked at did,you could take it off and use wssm Leupold Base and rings. I always wanted one but have 2 post 70 in .223 varmint rigs already. very best winpoor
FN states that the hole spacing doesn't allowe for Winchester 70 spaced ring components.
My thinking is that te rail will make the scope too high even with low rings. Any ideas about this??
Is the hole spacing on the rear bridge closer than the standard .860"? Kind of looks like it to me. Not quite sure I understand your issue, but sounds like you want a lower mount.

It's really not any different than other Model 70s, just slightly more compact with different spacing. I've had good luck mounting 3-9x40 scopes using Talley lows or extra lows on LA and SA rifles. Currently using Warne 2 piece bases and Leupold PRW low rings. Works for me with the standard featherweight stock. I'd imagine the Hogue's comb is just as high or higher than that one. For what it's worth, both the Talleys and Warne bases are available for the WSSM action from Midway. Also, looks like DNZ makes low Game Reaper for the WSSM spacing.

Some food for thought...
This is from the FN TSR manual.

Winchester® Model 70TM scope bases will not fit FNH USA rifles, as the mounting screw holes are a different size (8-40 thread) and spacing.
You could have the standard bases opened up to #8 from the standard #6 by a gunsmith or machinist. Hole spacing is the same. I wouldn't consider that a dead end, just a little more work.

Does your rifle actually have the 8-40 holes, or is that just what the manual states? Didn't know the TSRs had 8-40, learn something new every day.
What manual states.
FN did that with their PBR and SPR's as well....
