Sighted in the 71 this week. It was high at 50 yds with 200g silvertips. but luckily it was dead on with 250g Woodleighs. Looked at adjusting the vertical but could not turn the Up/Dn knob. luckily it was dead on with 250g Woodleighs. I can push the sight down with finger pressure, which allows the knob on top to float around freely. I left off the finger pressure and the up/dn knob is put under pressure. But either way it will not turn. I have not forced it in either position. How does this thing adjust vertically? I tried another 71, same sight and it turned and adjusted fine.

thanks
Charlie

Hello CR, I bought a M-71 from BSA here at the fire with the bolt peep just like yours, KROIL is your friend, elevation was right on with mine too with 250 gr heavy jacket Barnes bullets at 2350 fps, and is easily adjustable by turning the big knurled wheel, which remains free wheeling save a little spring pressure to keep it secure.

The only adjustment I had to make was to move the sight left a lit, mostly due to the difference's in the way BSA and I held and fired the rifle.

KROIL, a toothbrush, and a bit if time will free up all screws for adjusting.
If you can push the sight down against spring pressure, the screw is probably froze up. Doing as Gunner said will probably resolve it. If not Bob Nisbet is THE man for 98a bolt peeps. Not sure if the contact info below is still correct but a place to start if you need parts or expertise.

Apparently the rifle was dropped on the sight or something dropped on the sight. The elevation knob was bent and turns in a different plane that it was designed to do. when the lower edge reached the lock tab, that was as far as it would go. More forceful turning just locked it more. I took both screws on top out, pressed the sight down against the spring tension, and was able to turn the knob. I have straightened the knob bolt somewhat and it is adjusting now. Thanks for the help.
