Saw A gorgeous pre 64 win model 88 in 308 for sale today. Was in great shape. Clip very good, nice sling, stock in really great correct shape. Even had a very clear older Leup 2x7 scope! Talked him down to 650! But I walked. Why?? because someone chopped the barrel down to 18 inches! They did a good job but I just couldn't over look it. It was not a factory carbine either. On a good note I ended up taking home a 1961 model 70 FWT in 243, someone put a pad on it. But for 740 I believe it was a steal.

Definitely a mistake letting the 88 go, but then I love pre-64 Model 88s.
Letting a M/88 with a shortened barrel go in favor of a M/70 with a pad? Buyer made the correct decision IMHO.
You did well.
The 88 would make a nice rebore to .338 Fed or .358 Win
The 243 FWT shot fantastic yesterday. Not losing sleep over the cut 88. I couldn't bring myself to cutting up the 88 as a parts gun.
Not a big 243 fan, but that's a nice rifle. A 308 with an 18 inch barrel? Sounds like too much muzzle blast.
I never had much use for a .243, but I've always liked the looks of an 88. I'd only been excited about yours if it had been an original carbine 88 in .308, not one that someone cut down. That M70 action will always be in demand for a custom build, so yes, you did well.

That's what I was thinking
Or a rebarreled to 708. I always thought that would be cool..
Still a little steep for a cutoff barrel...but the scope is worth 150 or so..
