Got to the ranch about 2. 4ish I walked back of the cabin about 1/2 mile to watch an opening. Lots of trails and sign. Saw many smallbucks. Nothing I would shoot. About 5:40 I start easing back to the cabin. Watched same deer I saw earlier. Got between two motts about 15 yards apart. And now its getting dark. Look over scross opening toward the lane and hell. There’s a damn nilgai bull walking out in the open. I’m kinda in shadows so he ain’t on to me. Standing offhand I pit sights where I think they should go Boom, flop! DRT. I chamber another round and start pacing to the bull. 140 paces. 63 y o old azz eyes. Freezer meat. He went down like he was poleaxed. More in a minite. Gutting him wore me out. Gotta catch my breath. Skinning and quartering next.
1895 mfg in 1915. .30 US Army ctg. 220 grain Hornady RN. I think 46 or 47 grains IMR 4064.
Nice one and you killed it with an old rifle with open sights, even better.
What cut are you going to eat first and how are you going to cook it? That hide would make a mighty nice rug, too.
RS
That’s awesome Bob! I remember you talking about hunting Nilgai and it being the best meat. Glad to see you got a nice one!
That is so cool! The old .30 still getting it done. Good shooting, too.
There's gotta be a 24HCF award or something for the coolest animal taken with the coolest rifle this season!
I carried my 1895 .405 deer hunting last week, but alas, no deer.
Congrats on taking him with the 1895
KW,
Come on now - fess up! We know you can’t kill something as tough as a nilgai bull with a 30/40 with a c&c bullet.
Heck of a nice hunt and story, thanks for taking us along!
Whoop!
That’s freaking awesome, K Dub!
That is OUTSTANDING, Bob...congrats!
I dunno if I could do that...every time I get ready to shoot one of my leverguns I have to check them because they always look like the front sight has fallen off.
Good going Bob! I have heard they are excellent table fare.
Were you wearin' any funny pants or such?
A nice hat at minimum is a surety.
Congrats and enjoy the work and the eatin'. Like splitting wood, it's well worth it afterward.
Geno
PS forgot to add, I just love those spotted socks on them critters. I have to get to TX someday to hunt them.
That's just really cool. Well done!
Alright KW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice job Buddy!

I suppose you can when you hit ‘em here!
Thank everyone.
Geno, no I got on regular everyday clothes.
As you can see didn’t over penetrate. I cut bullet out of other side. Feel it under skin
Impressive shot. Good write up. Going to tan the hide?
Awesome shot! Most incredible meat. Those blue bulls are some tough hombres. And with that ole 1895 maybe the coolest thing I’ve seen done in a long while! Good on you!!
Impressive shot. Good write up. Going to tan the hide?
Whew! No i had to cut the hid up to get him done. I was afraid to try to use the cheezy little
Pulley assembly they had here and I went and left my chain hoist at home. Bet he weighed close to
500 pounds all said and done.
That’s awesome, we’ll done

Very, very cool sir!
Where was you tryin to hit him?
Yes!
Where was you tryin to hit him?
Right where he was aiming 😜
My wife sniped a coyote years ago.
Shot him right in the ear.
As I was congratulating her she admitted that she had been aiming at the lungs.
Ded is ded!
Nice shooting Bob!
pretty nice. and with a worthy gun too.
we don't have them animuls around here.
for the layman like me, what in the world is a mott?
Geezer Gets It Done!
Outstanding!

LOL. All of has probably done that at least once or twice 😬
Congrats on that animal and taking him with one cool danged rifle! Great to see the old levers and RNs getting it done!
for the layman like me, what in the world is a mott?
Gus, it’s what we always called a cluster of oak trees like on a prairie.
OUTSTANDING! Congratulations
What a great story and photos. Congrats!

Right where he was aiming 😜
One dang fine rifle and shooter that can stand on his hind legs and hit a Nilgai in the noggin at 140 paces!
These are the post that put a smile on my face. Congrats to you sir and thanks for sharing.
Very cool. Congratulations. Sweet Nilgai and the rifle is pure coolness.
Saw 4 bulls from right here close to cabin this morning. 3 were together crossing open at about 300 yds. One was biggest damn bull I’ve ever seen! Big blue bastid he was. Only Saturday. If young son wants one he may still get his chance. He saw 2 cows but over on neighbors place. Low fence. Never know. He also had a good buck come out this more. But he was moving back and forth on sendero too fast to get a comfortable shot.
He has two Husqvarna 640’s ( 30-06 & .270) and a 94 Win carbine in .30 WCF with him. We’ll see.
Hell, Im done for weekend. Except mebbe some quail. Model 12 is with me.
That is badass! I’d love to get a crack at such a cool critter! Good job Kaywoodie

In half light and with open sights!
If things ever get bad enough for a real shooting war I wouldn’t mind having KW in my fox hole...besides he smokes a pipe too and I could bum some ‘baccy off him.
Congratulations! Fantastic animal with a extremely cool rifle. Great shooting sir!
That is one rifle model I really want. Enabler.

Well, they are still out there to be had. 😁
Nice job, with an awesome rifle! I bet this wasn’t taken near Bastrop, maybe a little further south? Congratulations and Happy Thanksgiving!

😁😁😁
Several miles SW of Sarita in Kenedy county. South of the old Santa Rosa Ranch.
That’s great country down there.
Good eating there Bob! Congrats!
Old son got head to me today for my Christmas present. He did a pretty dang good job, being the hydrostatic shock from the head wound didn’t make his work any easier. I gotta figure out a way to mount it on something Where it won’t come all apart. Its kinda rickety.
Very nice Bob! Maybe glue a small block of wood in the back to install a hanger.
Maybe brush some thinned epoxy from underneath and inside the skull to strengthen it? Nice Skull mount!
Congrats on your hunt and shot. I just looked up at my first one on the wall and darned if yours is a bit longer horns. I shot my first Nilgai with my 1895 .405 WCF and 300 grain bullets. Here is a pic of my second on taken with .405 Simson Suhl double down near Hondo right after 5 inch rain. My son shot one that went down about 10 yards away. Enjoy the meat!
