...I've been looking for months and months for a new (or old and working) main-spring for my old 1895 flatside rifle... The places online are always "sold out" or "out of stock"...

Anyone got anywhere i can look? I've been looking on Homestead and others for months... scoured ebay and the like too.. Maybe just too rare to hardly find?

Any help would be appreciated.

For some reason (unless I’ve confused it with something else which is possible), but I thought the 1895 mainspring was interchagable with the models 1894 and 92.

When I get home I can get to my shop and check this out. Sorry there’s lots of jumbled things going around in my brain these days. I should know this!!! If this is the case there are ample suppliers with such springs in stock.

If somebody out there knows for sure, please correct me if I’m wrong!!!!

OK! They are different. 94 has a stirrup on hammer and requires a hook on the mainspring. 1895 has a pinned roller in the hammer. See photo



I suppose your best bet is just keep checking Homestead, Wisner, e-gunparts, Nu-line gunparts and such places until one becomes available. I’m betting the guys who make parts, make ‘em in batches.

Keep an eye on eBay, a M95 Main Spring (with screws) sold for $59.99 on 29 Sept.

With a little perseverance a fella can make one. Start with annealed spring steel stock of proper thicknes and file/grind/bend to shape. Heat, quench, temper- done. Guys have been doing it for literally hundreds of years- if a backwoods blacksmith/gunsmith in 1760 could do it, so can you!

thanks kaywoodie.... I knew they were different, BUT, looking at them side-to-side, I might be able to make one from the 1894 spring.... it kinda looks like it's got enough size to be "sized down" and narrowed, shaped,etc...to make an 1895 spring.. Might look into that.

....was thinking the same things but hadnt got there yet... I have tried to repair/rejuvinate the original one in it...(was broken..) couple time trying to weld, shape, etc....but could never get the spring back in it...

Yeah, re-attaching spring halves back together is an exercise in frustration.

LOL!!! Here’s a mainspring I pulled out of a model 1894 that spent a little time on both sides of the Rio Grande! Reported to have been in at least 2 shoot outs.





Old gun has had a lot of unique " custom" work on it too!

Yes. 25-35 WCF. to boot!

I just thought I would save that bit of frontier gunsmithery and replace the spring for now 😉. I did take a doe with it.
