Waltzed into the gunshop to see what powder and bullets they may have in stock...unfortunately, they were out of everything I needed. So I walked over to the used gun rack which is always dangerous. As always, there were a few rifles and shotguns that caught my eye but the one that really had me curious was a lefty Remington M700...hmmm...ADL configuration...straight comb with cheek piece...gray, pebble texture finished stock...no lock..."C" prefix serial...is this a KS model?

I asked them to take the action out of the stock just in case there were any identifying marks but no luck...however, the stock was darn light, even with a 1" recoil pad. It had some bubba-ing done to it though. It looked like someone removed what was a pressure pad from the barrel channel...and there was some hunting dings and scratches. That said, the price was good...like, really good. I figured I could always get my money back for this price.

Got it home and did some further disassembly. The bare rifle weighs 6lbs, 11oz. The stock alone weighs 23.5oz by itself.

I'm fairly certain I just picked up a KS for a good price, but could use some opinions or help in confirming it.

I can load pics tomorrow but figure everyone knows what a M700 looks like.

Does it have sights? Or were there sights at one time? The KS didn't.
If you have other model 700's, mic the barrel's The KS has a different taper.. That'll tell you for absolute certainty.

Sounds like it.
How is the barrel marked? If it’s just the chambering plus the date codes on the left and proofs on the right … you scored!

In this case, it would be helpful.

The KS barrel markings are pretty unique

No sights. The barrel mics 0.646" @ the muzzle and 0.727" just in front of the stock's fore end. The stock is very thin and trim. The fore end tip only measures a little over 1.250" wide.

Chambered in 7mm Rem Mag, very few markings on the barrel.

Working on pics.

PICS!

Assumption here was the removal of a pressure pad.

Not sure what kind of ding they tried to fix here, but it could definitely use some TLC. The recoil pad is definitely due for a refresh.

Nice! You did well.
That is a KS.
Barrel code dates it to December ‘90, and that appears to be a McMillan.

I'm not a huge fan of the 7mm Rem Mag...I would have much rather it been a .30-06 or .270W. However, when I saw it on the rack, the hang tag only said $500. I have known the dealer a while and while I was looking it over she says "I know the guy selling this and he may take less....do you want me to call him?"

After tax, I walked out of the store with that rifle for only $430.

I don't know what I plan to do with it just yet, I just knew I wasn't going to leave it on the rack at that price. I may scope and shoot it but part of me also thinks it would make a fine .257 Weatherby one day.

Great score at that price!

I’ll look for your picture at the post office.

Nice score. I'd leave it as a 7 if me, but could like to try a 264 Win on that one too. Looks like a easy paint job to get the stock fixed. No way to pass that deal up.

The KS McMillion stock had a very fragile paint job. Most that were hunted show wear.

This one definitely shows some chips and scratches in the paint in various places (besides the large and obvious repair on the butt stock).

For $430 I feel bad about those. I can pm an offer?
