How's about a picture thread with only southpaw rifles in it?
Posted By: Wrongside Re: Photos- LH Customs - 01/24/13
I didn't put this one together and I'm sure this it'll get trumped right quick, but it's probably my most fun to shoot rig. By a mile... smile

-Trued up LH M700 SA w/ Gretan LW pin assembly (mag box modified to feed 75 Amax, shoots them real good!)
-SS Pacnor 1-8 chambered in 223Rem

Not sure you can call this one a true custom b/c this is the way it was manufactured but they did not make too many. Its a DuBiel Arms in 7mm-08. I don't have any overall pictures. The first picture is with the bolt in the full up position (36 degree bolt rotation). Second is with the bolt closed.

sort of a custom lefty... this Savage 99 was modified with an aftermarket tang safety to make it easer for a lefty to use. And it does work quite slick.

Another LH DuBiel.
I was pleasantly surprised to see Drew's (lovemy99) picture of his DuBiel, 7mm-08. He is right, there aren't too many out there and I would love see or hear about others. My most recent accounting found that there are 28 in museums which left 101 in circulation (hopefully). We have now seen two in this conversation.
The pictures of my .375 aren't anything to brag about. I just wanted to get them out there because if I wait until I get around to it and take better ones, well....
The top rifle is a Winchester 1900. The DuBiel is a LH .375 H&H with Leopold 1.5x5 VXII. Heavy but accurate and so long as I remember to hold on correctly, not so bad a kicker.
[Linked Image]
I was able to put it to good use two summers ago. I just hope I can do so again one day. The gun came to me used and with several stock dings. I wish I knew its story prior to my being its caretaker.
[Linked Image]
Mine has accounted for a couple of whitetails, the kudu, a gemsbok, and a warthog.
I would love to hear from other 70's - 80's vintage DuBiel Arms owners.
Lou
PS While I am at it; how do I post bigger pictures? (from photobucket)

not a good pic at all, basically just a 700 BDL in .338 about the only custom aspect to it is the McMillan it rests in

and really need a better pic of this one, it's had the most work done to it, started life as a standard 700 BDL in 7 mag, had barrel lathed down, action scalloped, bolt handle drilled etc. to lighten it up, twas my sheep rifle until I got a NULA in 7mm-08[Linked Image]

A couple of Remington's I've had some work done on. Top one is a 243 CDL that I had Karl flute the bolt on and then a local smith stuffed it in an McMillan Edge stock. I have a barrel ordered (a year ago) from Rock and I'm going to have it chambered in 243ai if/when it shows. This gun balances so nice in that stock...

The second is my 223 ai that I had a Sid Goodling build, he is from PA. A McMillan Edge and a Kreiger #3 1-12 twist. I had Gre-Tan bush the firing pin and add one of their lightweight bolt shrouds. I put a Timney trigger in it last summer. It is a great shooting 'chuck gun.

Like others, I originally posted this under custom rifles. My Mike Bryant 7mm Remington Magnum built on a Stiller TAC 300 Action. That's the first group shot with some Sierra 168 gr. Match Kings. No load work, just some mild handloads put together for testing at Mike's range. Three shot group measured .161 at 100 yards. I tried to be cool but Mike could tell I was pretty happy.

Probably my favorite hunting rifle, a Savage Model 11 in .338 Federal. Doesn't really look like a custom, but it is.

Barrel: PAC-NOR fluted .338 Federal (1 in 10 twist, 3 groove)
Finish: Robar on the action, NP3 on the trigger group and bolt.
Stock: McMillan Savage Hunter with pillars.

How about a slightly customized 700 BDL LH in 7mm Rem Magnum? It's been glassed, pillared and floated, with a one-piece steel floorplate and triggerguard. A 3.5lb trigger job was done, along with a slight muzzle crown. Talley rings and a Leupold complete the package. An ultimate 700, but not too pretty to go running around in the woods with.

I have a few lefties, but these two are my only non factory LH rifles.
This is a custom MRC that started out as a 358, but turned into a 308 last summer with a new Shilen barrel, it's in a Serengetti laminated stock.
The original barreled action was sent to Serengetti before it was blued, they fit the action, glassed it and pillar bedded it. The stock was made to my extra long length of pull, ebony forend cap and cross bolt plugs, checkered and fitted with a recoil pad. Then hand rubbed oil finish. Not much was required with the new barrel as only the action was glassed.
The action was trued, lugs were lapped, barrel was lapped with recess crown, then matt finish. It's a great looking MOA shooter
[Linked Image]
This is my 270, 700 BDL in a Boyds laminated stock that I got in the rough and finished myself.
Gun has a trigger job and needed nothing else as it was a MOA shooter right out of the box. It's glassed in the stock with pillar bedding, still a great shooter but a backup to my Montana.

I had 2 boxes of 275 H&H ammo made by Winchester-Western. I think even JOC made have had a 275 H&H.

That converted 1941 Model 70 brings back a lot of memory. It looks like a Bob West job. Others came up with better bolt stop (releases) than Bob, but the worked. I've had several over the years and still have some.

A change of pace, '50s lefty custom. Or, how to turn a $700 rifle into a $250 one. Of course at the time, they were $25

Here's one I put together for a left handed son.
A stainless Ruger Mark II rebarreled to 35 Whelen in a factory stock. The stainless leftys were never offered in walnut.
After these pics were taken we beadblasted the shine off of it and he installed a 2.5-8 Leupy in matte low rings.[Linked Image]

While not a full custom, here's a Stainless LH Model 70 I recently acquired and did some customizing to. I think it turned out pretty nice.

Work I did to it:

New custom Mauser-style bolt handle buildup and bolt release lever(by Mark Penrod)

Cut and re-crown barrel to 24", and whole barreled action bead-blasted to look factory fresh(by "Redneck")

PT&G steel bottom metal Cerakoted "Satin mag" to match stainless steel(by Eddie Fosnaugh). Still need to have Eddie Cerakote the Talley mounts in graphite black.

McMillan Win 70 FWT pattern in Black w/Gray speckletone paint

Glass bedding/floated barrel(did myself)

Cal: 7mm Rem Mag

Sorry for the crappy cell-phone pics.

Should be good medicine for Mulies/Elk on cross-canyon shots with handloaded 160gr Accubonds or 140gr T-TSX at 3,000 and 3,100 fps respectively.

You have impeccable taste in firearms, utah708.

That is also a aftermarket bolt handle and three position safety?

Good eyes--it is a Gentry 3 position and aftermarket handle.

Put this KS clone .280 Ackley together last year. Shilen 25" Rem sporter contour barrel, fluted bolt, KS custom shop stock, tuned factory trigger, cerakoted graphite black. I bedded the stock and the Talley bases and my buddy lapped the rings. With Bushnell 4200 3-9 it weighs 7.8 lbs. Haven't done any load development yet, first load tried is the 120 gr TTSX at 3200 fps. Groups run about 3/4" vertical with almost no horizontal dispersion, may be my bench technique.

Stainless 700 RUM action, HS Precision stock, take off 25.5" Rock Creek #4 barrel chambered by GAP in 8mm Rem Mag. 9 pounds scoped. Stock and scope base bedded by me. Shoots 200 gr Partitions at 3150 fps under an inch. Last 3 shot 100 yd group went 0.48". The mud on the stock is from Alberta, where I killed 3 bears on two hunts including a gorgeous blonde/white 6 footer. I leave the mud on there to remind me of two awesome hunts. I also killed the 144" 9 pt in my avatar with this rifle.

Here's a couple more lefties.

A 32 caliber flintlock. Don't know the builder but it's a tack driver. A truly fun rabbit gun.

Left handed Charles Daly Mini Mauser, 6mmx222, Pacnor barrel, MPI stock, action and barrel cerrakoted.
