I've just bought a Savage 24 30-30/20 ga. It needs a lot of work. It's fitted with a plastic trigger guard that I'm not happy with. Does anyone know if a replacement steel one is available?
Ask in the Savage collectors forum here on the fire, , and over at savage24.com, and savageshooters.
Somewhere I have seen someone had done exactly what your looking for, using a single shot trigger guard IIRC. I just don't recall where, but that info is on the net..
I recall posting this before somewhere, but here's a fix that has worked for me. Like erich suggested above, I used a steel guard off of an old scattergun. After a wee bit of filing and bending I have the forward tab "hooked" into the trigger guard opening and the rear is attached to the factory screw location. It has been solid and looks like it came with the 24 after painting it with aluminum paint to match the Deluxe finish. Take a look: (ignore the plastic guard on right. Guard on bottom left is a similar steel shotgun guard).
I've seen ones machined out of various types of metal, some nice some not so nice. I've seen them made out of scrap metal strapping and of wood! But I don't recall seeing any commercially available aftermarket ones.
Buying another gun to swipe the metal one seems a little much, you still end up with a gun with a plastic guard.
