I've started to research some outfitters but would like some recommendations.

Thank you

Barry Seabrook has a decent 2 x 1 offer. Target mostly bulls and likely shoot about 25 between the two of you. Theres no real limit, the limitert being whatever can be boned out for croc food. About 7700 US apiece.

I had a wild hunt with him awhile back, shot 111 buffalo and 30 pigs. The other guys got some too. smile

I have been on a hunt with Eddie Clarke - he got my son who was then 11yrs to 29 yards. I was able to take a Gold medal bull. It is a true outback experience, free range and in the bush. I would highly recommend Eddie.

Eddie is also a regular at the SCI show - that should give him some credibility, his family have been doing this for over 30 years - he has the runs on the board.

Be careful on what you want, farm or outback experience, cull hunt or trophy hunt, rifle or bow. All outfitters are different and have different blocks, some don't have permission to hunt and will sneak you about. Make sure you call a few references and asks about.

Carl Goodhand is another option - I know Carl but have not hunted with him.

Lets see, I want to hunt 2 weeks, and then want my money back when I don't kill anything.....

That what you after again sheep?

I think instead of researching outfitters they should research you. And run like hell.

What caliber rifle do you use for water buffalo? Biggest rifle I have is a 338 Win mag
Posted By: Model70Guy Re: Water Buffalo - 12/05/16
I've used from 30-06 to .458. The bigger the better, no question whatsoever. Having said that you can kill them with your .338; its hard to impress one with anything.

Use good bullets, A-Frames are about as good as it gets.

When I hunted in Arnhemland, NT in 2010 & 2014 the guide used a Rem 700 in 375RUM for Water Buffalo but now he uses a Ruger in 458Lott.

He reckons both cartridges work just fine.

A 375 H&H should be good
Posted By: longjohn Re: Water Buffalo - 01/05/17
I've shot a couple with a 308W, is what many of the meat shooters use. Put a good round into the heart lung area and it's usually down if you do it right first time. The problems arise when you don't put them down immediately. I have seen them absorb a couple of 375's if they aren't well placed. They can get nasty if you annoy them. Grandpa used to shoot them with a 303 from horseback. Some of the old blokes used 44/40 but I wouldn't recommend the practice.
I to a 9.3x62 and 286gn Woodleigh bullets.

A benchrest shooting buddy shot this one in 2010 with his bow. Had a crooked outfitter and had a lot of trouble getting his trophy home.
Pretty nice animal.

I have got to get to Oz someday, I have a 50-90 Sharps and 715 grains of flat nosed paper patched lead with a Water Buffs name on it. cool

Good luck on your hunt!

I need to clarify this a little. Actually the problem was the booking agent in the USA. His Aussie people Territory Buffalo Safari, Brenden Hurt was very good. He hunted the very NE corner of the continent.

Good to know. Thanks!

GuyM, the 375H&H either the Ruger #1 or Winchester M70 would be the one for the hunt.

I've seen them drilled between the horns with a 257 Wby. Step and a half before it dropped.

Any guesses on that buff's weight?
Posted By: gunner500 Re: Water Buffalo - 02/25/17
No Water Buffalo experience here, but do have cattle, I'd say at least 2100 lbs.

Would your front end loader pick that one up high enough to clear the ground, looks pretty long.

Heck yaeh DF, chain that beast around the neck and hit the hydraulics grin, IIRC my JD loader will reach about 18'

Pretty cool shooting that big dude with an arrow.

My "arrow" would be a 270 TSX out of my .375 H&H... grin

Those big buff would be worthy of my .375 and 300 gr bullets for sure! And, I as I recall, the people speak something vaguely akin to English...

Are they aggressive like Cape buffalo.

Just committed to do a buff cull hunt next year. 2-4 buff a day for a least a week. Leaning real hard towards the Swift A-Frame 300 gr. Sp 375 H&H. Gonna be fun. May bring a 416 or 458 along for a box or 2 of shooting just for a comparison. Be cool to get 25 or so buff in 9 days.

Cull hunts are good fun. One thing to consider though is the maximum weight of ammunition you can carry on your flight, especially if you are going to bring in heavy rounds like .458. It isn't hard to go through 5 kg of ammo, especially if you are not only hooking into the buffalo but also pigs, donkeys etc. You can of course get ammunition in Darwin, but you might want to organise in advance to get the one laid in that you want if it is a less-common load.

ow, thats a huge one, with with a success of that seize transporting will be a little hassle.
Posted By: Zengela Re: Water Buffalo - 05/12/17
I'm good ammo wise. On the heavy stuff, only 20 or so rounds of ammo for 458 or whatever i decide to take(if anything heavy) rest 375 H&H. Will Max out my 5 kilo import, but won't use it all up.

Let us know how you like the cull hunt. I can see myself going on one of those in a couple years.
