Going to have to get the electric fence up around the corn early this year.
laugh

I'm surprised that live trap holds them. wink

I had one like it they could get out of.

Went to a supper heavy duty one, and have caught probably 50-60 or more in it. It's showing the wear and tear though....
I've caught several of them here, in city, with the standard duty Havahart traps, like that one.

This trap works, but it's far from robust. This is just the 3rd coon in it and it's already showing signs of wear. I enclosed the back 6" on the pan end with 1/8" paneling and zip ties, otherwise there's nowhere to put the bait where they can't reach in and grab it. You can see the ripped out paneling on the floor. Downside is once caught, they tear everything to [bleep], and I gotta replace the paneling with new zip ties.

When this one gives up the ghost, I'll go with something more heavy duty...

You might try this instead of the panaling... http://m.homedepot.com/p/HDX-1-2-in...web_pip_rr-2-_-204331884-_-204331881-_-N
Last I checked, Tractor supply and Rural King both had heavier duty versions available.

Yeah, that would do it, probably have some of that lying around not that you mention it..
Here's the one I use.

Kinda expensive, but I've had mine for years, and it still works well. Never lost a coon.

I put the bait under the trap, under the bait trip pad. Then I put a cinder block on top of the trap after it's set. (That way they can't reach through, and can't move the trap to get the goodies.) smile
I went through the Hav-a-heart trap in one season fifteen years ago. A Coon tore it up to where the door wouldn't shut right. Bought a Tru-Catch which is a lot heavier duty and it is at least fifteen years old. I fix it to the ground or a wall if its in the barn so it cannot be rolled over and open up.

The tru catch is a simple release and a door that drops straight down. When it is down it is secured with a metal ring on each side.

Here is a link and for $100.00 it is the best trap I have seen.

Coon Cuff trap gets coons like crazy and very seldom a skunk. I did get an Opposum last week though. First time ever.
I made one from a scrap wire corn crib mesh.

What is bait? I've used Captin Crunch, and coco poofs. .
I build heavier ones but what is funny is to call them live traps. Nothing alive other than the wife's cats have ever come out of them. Jelly donuts and calf milk replacer works great
I'd rather use dog proofs.

Bait them with dry cat food, marshmallows and jelly beans.
I caught 3 of those things with one of those traps, no issues. Never thought a 'coon would be the source of killing chickens. Lost a couple, found out where they were being dragged out under the fence. So I set up a game camera and there he was!

Marshmallows are the trick for catching 'coons.
I quit using the live traps and went to the dog-proof foot hold traps. I use dry cat food, even chex-mix for bait, as most anything works. I do not believe in catch and release of coons and possums.

I had a few tins of old Kipper snacks in the pantry. Poured the juice in a straight line and put little pieces of fish down, Hansel and Gretel style to the trap, then flung a big piece in the back of the trap. Has worked well so far..
As my friend explains it to me, that is a submersible underwater exploration chamber.

Peanut butter and dry catfood sandwich.

Recipe:

1 stale slice of bread.

Smear with peanut butter.

Add dry catfood sprinkles.

Place under the trap tripping device, under the entire trap is better. laugh

I thought about you today. Was shredding, and a possum came out right in front of me...

Ugly bastid. Looked mangy to me.

Couldn't get my 1911 unlimbered fast enough though. smile
