A few months ago, I posted here that I ordered a Lund SSV 16. I wanted a smaller boat that was easier to deal with on smaller lakes. Well, months later, I get a call from the dealer that they accidentally ordered the wrong boat and didn’t realize it until it was delivered. So, I cancelled the order since they didn’t think they could get the boat I wanted until 2024.

So, I called another Lund dealer….200 miles from the house. I told them what happened and after it was all over with, they got me into another 16 footer on a killer deal. Only a couple thousand more. Got a new Lund Angler 1650:

50hp. Thats the max for this boat. As long as I can get to about 25 mph, I’ll be ok with it.

Just need a Bimini top now for trolling ..... good looking rig 🤘🏻

Agreed, Bimini tops make a big difference on a hot day or if its raining or snowing long as there's not too much wind. Well worth the money. Mine's on a 17 foot Tracker, a put it on yourself deal that's about half the cost of dealer installed and after nine years still works well.

50 should be plenty for a 16 ft fishing boat. I've got a 40 on my 17 semi V Tracker that's nowhere near as streamlined as your boat and and according to the boat speedometer, for what that's worth, it will do a little better than 25 most days.

I’m hoping to do the motor break in as soon as I get some time. Thats the worst part about 4 strokes.
Posted By: Magnum_Bob Re: New Boat Debacle - 03/24/23
It is a swell looking outfit does the motor have power trim? With that and tuning it for your load it should run 30 +mph .well with a light load anyway...mb

Problem with the bimini tops is that there are always things in your way.
Here in Florida sun protection is important for many of us.
And many of us use a beach umbrella instead of a bimini.
Its best to shorten the pole to lower it a bit closer to your head.
And on very windy days its best not to use it, and in any event always attach a line to it so the wind dosent take it away.
And of coarse remove it for high speed running.

50 will get you there. I bought two new 4 stroke Merc 50s last summer for builds. One I put on an 18’ Lund build out, tiller, and the guy does very well with it. The other still in the crate in my shop looking for a home.

I went when he bought the rig for a run and I was impressed with that Merc. Your boat may have a bit more built in weight but I’m betting it scoots. I’m not sure where your using your boat but in years past adjustments were made in prop pitch for the elevation, helping performance. Maybe the 4 strokes are beyond that?

It does have power trim. I got it to 4500 rpm on the test drive and that got about 22 mph with two good sized guys in it. My other boat cruises at 42 mph, so this feels kind of slow. But, I intend to use it on smaller lakes where I’m not running 30 minutes between fishing spots.

I have a 9 inch Garmin graph and a 24v 80# i-pilot equipped Minn-Kota Terrova.
I had the same issue with a 2021 Ranger VS 1782 SC ordered in October 2021 and boat came in in March 2022 but was the VS 1682 SC ordered in error by the dealership. I cancelled and had to reorder but all 2021 boats were pre sold so it had to be a 2022. I got it in August 2022 and it was worth the wait. I have a Merc 115 Pro XS giving around 45 MPH and have an 80 pound Terrova on the bow. It has a 7 inch Lowrance Hook reveal on the bow and a 7 inch Lowrance HDS on the console. It takes the big Lake Champlain waves well.

That 4 stroke Merc is so quiet you forget it's running when sitting at idle.
Yes very quiet and has alot of power especially since my old boat was under powered with a merc 25 EFI 4 stroke. Was a small 16 foot Lund Fury SS. Very good boat but once i put a 24V Terrova on the bow with the 31 series batteries it was plain that it needed a 40. I got 10 great years out of it but finally decided to get something a little longer with an 8 foot beam. New Ranger aluminum takes the big Champlain waves really well.

Nice rig. I ordered mine September 9th, still waiting. Springers are trickling in, starting to get irritated.

There are a few Ranger multi-species aluminum v-hull boats at a local dealer here. They look pretty nice.

Regarding a bimini top....

If you give the straps a 1/2 twist when securing them to the eyes on the boat, the straps won't vibrate when you are moving with top up. Many of the tops come with plastic pieces. Be aware they will harden and become brittle after a few seasons been there done that......

Here is one of many links for the metal hardware.

Gooch, I ordered a smoker craft pro v 18 sportsman. According to my salesman they were having a hard time sourcing aluminum and getting welders??

I heard the same. Did you buy from Verles?

Stevens down in Portland.

My 18ft crestliner kodiak has a 60hp merc on it with the command thrust (lower unit off a 90hp). It came waaaay over propped with a 19 pitch, need to swap it out with a lower one but I can troll all day at about .2-.3gal/hr. Tops out at about 22mph at 3800rpm which is how I knew its got too much pitch in the prop. I contacted the dealer and they sent me a 13 pitch prop but it takes a different hub assembly. The prop on it now is a 4 blade and the 13p is a 3 blade. One thing I noticed with the 4 blade prop is that boat will run like its on rails. Its a tiller and I can turn it as fast as I want to on step and it will run like its on rails and not cavitate at all.

I had the opposite happen to me. I ordered a Tracker Classic XL late in '21 for delivery in Spring '22. A couple weeks later, the dealer called and said he had one in but the buyer cancelled. Come pick up my boat. I had to scurry and find a storage unit to keep it over the winter, but I'm glad I did. Great little boat for the money. I agree about the 50 Merc - what a fabulous engine. If you get any fairly new Merc, DO get the Vessel View monitor. It's really nice to be able to monitor engine temps, fuel flow, hours run and much much more right on your phone via Bluetooth.

So far it’s great. It’s stable, dry, and gets up and goes pretty good. Bow storage configuration sucks.
