Anyone use a sit on top kayak for fishing?

I picked up a 12 footer this summer and am having a blast with it. This ol' fardt has no trouble getting around in it and enjoying a day on the water. Have been able to access some feeder streams and catch some trout.

The search is on for panfish in Colorado...<grin>

I just bought three for me and the kids. It's been fun so far, and let us get on water we otherwise wouldn't be able to effectively fish.

That just has to be a ton of fun with kids involved!

Yes it is. The fishing has been a bit slow, but we have been out twice in the last three days. We are going places I could never reach from the shore, so I have to figure out where the fish are and how to catch them. I'm working on it.

Picked up a 12' Field & Stream kayak this Spring. Loving it! Just been busy with house renovations the last month, need to get the kayak back out.

Gonna head out in the morning and fish a bit before the lakes get crazy with boats...

Yes i have a poke boat, two canoes and a kayak. Very relaxing. I float fish the rivers mostly in them but occasionally I will put in at a lake and fish hard to get to in a big boat spots, mainly in spring.

I use a 14.5' Dagger sea kayak. Doesn't have all the niceties of a fishing specific kayak but works great as a do-all; carries plenty of gear for trips, is light and handles the occasional rough water well.

I have 2. One is a Native Watercraft Slayer Propel 13 and the other is the newer Perception Pescador Pilot 12. Both are pedal craft and really scoot. A nearly effortless pedal stroke can give me 3 miles per hour cruising speed and I can bump it up to 5 if the storm clouds start to gather.

Got a NuCanoe Frontier 12 for this season and it has been great.

Was headed out this morning and figured out I did not have a fishing license. D'oh!

I have been thinking about a cartopper (actually truck topper) boat to use at smaller ponds and such. What advantage does a yak have over a 12 foot aluminum john boat or vee boat? From videos I have seen, these yaks seem a bit unstable and can roll over pretty easy. I don't want my fishing stuff to wind up at the bottom of the pond.

I learned a lesson today about kayaks.

Do not take anything on a kayak that:

1. does not float

2. is not tied on

A kayak is light and the one I borrowed is quite stable.....in fact touted as the most stable in the market.

I believe I had a center of gravity problem.


It was fun, even though I did not get a nibble, lost 200 dollars worth of rods and reels and went for an unscheduled swim.

They attacked at sunset... Life was good. Was 19"-20", caught on a #3 yellow Mepps Aglia.

A friend of mine is into them and I can't believe how nice they are getting....the new offerings have props that flip up and an access door for cleaning moss...even a rechargable battery model coming out....looks like they are designed by someone who actually uses them....

I think its definitely more fun to land a fish in a kayak as well. I had mine out 2 weeks ago fishing for largemouth. A musky took my senko and took me for a short ride. Unfortunately for me I forgot the net in the car. I realized this about 10 minutes after I was out but figured I'd make due without it.

2 hours later I've got a 2 and a half foot musky flopping around at the end of my line along side my yak. My cousin was out with me in my second yak and he commented that it was trying to jump in. Rod in one hand fish grip in the other I'm trying to get a moment where it's still so I can grab the lip with the fish grip and not get bit. The musky flops forward to the front of the boat and I watch as my line grazes the blade of my paddle resting across the deck. SNAP. No more Musky.

Doesn't count in terms of a caught fish since I didn't land it but it was pretty damn fun!
