Two questions for the Mauser cognoscenti:

Will an intermediate-length Mauser action (let's say a Yugo M48) handle the 9.3x62 cartridge. I know it's only 5mm longer than the 8x57, but is it too long? ...or should I stick with a 9.3x57?

Follow up: I have a nice LR barrel chambered in 7x57. If I have JES rebore it to 9.3mm, do I then have a barrel that’s good to go for the 9.3x57mm cartridge, or am I missing something?

I think thou wouldst regret using anything but the full length '98 (8 3/4'') for the 9.3x62 (although it IS shorter than the old '06). Remember those thousands of Columbian FN's with the gouge ground out of the front receiver to accept the '06 in stripper clips? Jesse O can tell you if your barrel profile has sufficient meat for the 9.3x57 for one thing, the other is body and shoulder dimensions are different 7x57 vs 9.3x57, they are two different animals. You need to get the drawings and compare, I'm just guessing that you may have to set her back a turn and cut a clean chamber. Might be cheaper to get a new 9.3 tube and sell the 7x57 tube. Half fast opinion.

Just exactly what I needed to know. Thanks very much! Smartest thing might be to mount the 7x57 barrel on the intermediate action (a very nice Zastava) and call it good.

The Yugo Intermediate magazine length is 3.230" in length while the COAL of the 9,3x62 is 3.291". Factory S&B 285 gr loads measured 2.280". So, with a little judicious file work to the back of the magazine box, you could easily alter the box length to accommodate factory ammo. Forget about seating long to get closer to the lands. FWIW, I'm shot a ton of factory ammo, both S&B and Prvi in various 9,3x62's and never found any accuracy issues even with their long leades.

As for the 9,3x57, it is based off the 8x57 so the shoulder is further forward. You cannot just rebore the barrel and run a neck reamer in. You would need a 9,3x57 reamer.

Many of those Commercial Intermediate Zastavas simply had the sides of the front of the mag box cut, then the middle was bent forward, voila, a longer mag box. You see this a lot on those sold by Heym with the lever release on the floorplate.

So i let me get this straight in my head, if i take a 8X57 BRNO and send it to my friends at JES and tell them I want it rebored I can get a 9.3X62 ?

Hi Captain, My name is Karen, and if you hog out a perfectly good 8x57 to a 9.3...I will suffer great emotional distress. On a more serious note, if I was contemplating that, I would load a dummy round 8x57 with a heavy bullet seated out to an OAL of something like 3.3" (to kinda replicate 9.3x62 length) and see how your mag and action length function with it. I have been cobbling up Bubba sporters on Mausers for many years, one thing for certain, when you start to mix and match cartridges and actions, you soon discover nothing is for certain. Somebody estimated there were 14 million Mausers built in the last century in 40 or more different factories, a playground for Murphy's Law.

If I understood z1r correctly, the result of what you propose would be a 9.3x57 Mauser. If you wanted a 9.3x62 Mauser, you’d need to rechamber with a 9.3x62 reamer after the rebore to 9.3mm. But I could easily be wrong....

JES has did several rifle for me over the last few years, what i have a is 8mm that is shortened to about 18" and it has seen a lot of use in its earlier days, so what I figured I could do a rechamber/rebore and make something very usable, i consider the 9.3 kind of a step sister to the 35 whelen or visa versa so I have heard they will work pretty good in short barrel configuration. Just trying to make something out a old war horse that is a bit used up at the moment.
