(2) homemade dies, a 7.62x54R round, and a 6.5x54r Vostok round.



I cut off an inch of 7/8-14 threaded rod and drilled a hole through it.
I used a boring bar to cut the final inside diameter.

I put a piece of 7.62x54r Lapua brass through the die.

I seated the bullet with a 260 Remington seater die.



I have not built the rifle yet, but I have the action, the stock, the barrel, the reamer, etc.
I will hunt with it in October.
Interesting.

What action, guessing a single shot of some kind for rimmed case.

Sizing dies are usually hardened. Do you need to harden this one, or use it as is.

Steel is harder than brass, no need to harden it unless you plan to get into the ammo business.

It will be a Mosin Repeater like this pictured 300WM with a Krieger barrel I built 6 years ago.
I have also converted Mosins to 7mmRM and 25 Krag Ackley that are repeaters.
The Mosins I converted to 45/70, 30-30, 45 Colt, and 223 are are single shot.

In October I will be hunting with a guy who is building a 270x54r right now. He has been hunting with Mosins for 51 years.

If your question is truly for discussion, here is my opinion. Reamers are used for accuracy, speed and repeatability. A reamer only takes 1/10 of the time to use as it would take to bore the die in a lathe and every one would be the same. Boring is OK for a one-off such as the OP’s application.
I have the two custom 6.5x54r Vostok reamers I ordered; 1) chamber, and 2) full length sizing reamer.

But I remember what a circus it was getting low runout necked down 6.5-06 brass with RCBS and Hornady dies.

notes:
30-06 brass is 2.494" long max
270 brass is 2.540" long max
6.5-06 brass is 2.504" long max
So 270 brass necked to 6.5-06 needs to be trimmed, but 30-06 brass does not.
270 Win Bonanza FL sizer with .296" neck
270 Win RCBS FL small base sizer with 0.297" neck. This sizes 270 brass neck O.D. 0.300" and The I.D. 0.266" go, 0.267" no go
6.5-06 Hornady FL sizer die with 0.271" neck
6.5-06 RCBS FL sizer die with 0.285" neck
The 6.5 mm bullet is 0.264", so we would like the neck to be 0.263" or 0.262" go
The 260 is 1.776" to the base of the neck.
The 6.5-06 is 2.1763" to the base of the neck.
To use a 260 Lee Collet Neck Die on a 6.5-06, I would want a 0.400" bushing.
I made a 0.387" bushing.
That changes the brass from 0.300" O.D. to 0.292" OD, and from .266" go I.D. to 0.262" Go with 0.003" concentricity
RCBS 6.5-06 sizer changes it to 0.283" OD ID to .253" go with 0.003" concentricity
Direct from 270 brass to 6.5 in the RCBS 6.5 [produces 0.006" concentricity and the trim die pilot scratches the inside of the neck.
30-06 brass to RCBS small base 270 die to Collet die does not require trimming, but has 0.010 to 0.020" runout in concentricity gauge.
30-06 brass to 6.5-06 RCBS die does not require trim but has 0.0045" run out
The necked down 30-06 brass is the same neck wall thickness as necked down 270 brass, revealing a common ancestor.
Previous 30-06 brass was low quality.
LC brass direct to 6.5-06 RCBS die has 0.001" runout.
Settled on 30-06 brass from St Marks , size with RCBS 6.5-06 lots of lube and rotate, RCBS 270 small base, and RCBS 6.5 again. Then chamfer. 3.34" feeds, 3.506 jams in the lands and extracts with 142 gr Nos

As KP231 says, just run the brass through the die. I just have not reamed the die yet.

It can quickly neck down a new Lapua 7.62x53r case with less than 0.001" of runout on the outside of the neck with respect to the body.

Quickload: 65kpsi, 3102 fps
1" (3) shot group at 100 yards
chrono: 2917, 2919, 2936 fps

Adjusting Quickload/quicktarget down to lower velocity by entering 45.5 gr powder:

What are you doing for a trigger on your Mosin's? Doctor the originals, aftermarket?
I use the Timney trigger, as shown in this video I made 10 years ago.


Just a heads up to those reading here. A person can purchase a universal neck sizing die that will work for all the old (or current) 6.5mm rifle cartridges. For necking down a case, I dont know, but; for reloading an a case that was already 6.5mm, it will get the job done.

I understand there is a lot more going on here than making a neck sizing due. But; based on the title of the discussion - I though it might be a good idea to put this on the record.
I started this thread in May with a home made neck die.

Afterwards, I ordered and waited for the $430 pair of reamers from Manson ; a) chamber reamer and b) sizer die reamer.
I got 4140 die blanks from PTG.

More work was cutting the Mosin extractor relief cut on the Lilja barrel.

I put the barrel in a rotary table. The reason the Mosin extractor is so narrow, is the bolt rotates 90 degrees, and the rim needs support for more than 180 degrees to stand up to the firing pin force without tipping..
