You've got a US made No 4 Mk 1*. The 5 you refer to is actually a stylized S. S is for Savage. They were made in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts. The US made rifles for the Brits for a few years during WWII. Accurate records weren't kept, but scholars put the serial no. 71C4853 as a 1943 build. The FTR just means that is was refurbished in 1948 in England in a suburb of Liverpool called Fazakerley. It was estimated that over 1.2 million No 4s were made by Savage.

I have no idea of the value in the States.

Asking prices on No 4s seem to be running in the $350-$450 range at the latest gun shows I've been to. That was what was marked on the tags, what they may have sold for (if any sold) I don't know. I just know that is more than I'm willing to spend on a typical No 4, even if a Savage. A Long Branch in better shape might be tempting at the lower figure but it would have to be much better. It also helps that I have both a Savage and a Long Branch so I can be picky looking at replacements.

I would prefer to be on the high side, one can always come down in price but asking a buyer to pay more can be difficult.

I have a few, including a Savage model, and I have not seen a decent No 4 Mk1 sell for much under $600 for quite some time. They regularly bring close to $650 and up on the auctions when you factor in shipping and transfer fees. There is a huge number of Enfield devotees out there. I would post some of the closed auctions but I think that is forbidden if I remember.
