I was trolling through the latest Hornady poster. They send me one every year.
I noticed that there are two nearly identical bullets. Both are .357. Both are XTP. However, one is prefaced with "FP."
The plain XTP is part # 35750. The FP version is #35780.
What are the differences between these bullets? I use the 35750 for my EDC Ruger LCR. In the future, should I switch to the FP? I am also thinking about a deer-ready load for my Marlin 1894. Which one do I want?
Many thanks in advance.
FP is for flat point, they aren't really hollow points, the meplat is just dished in a bit. Presumably they don't expand as violently. A friend of mine used 125 FP's in his .357 carbine on the theory that they would penetrate better than JHP's, I don't know if he ever put them to a test though.
FP XTPs and HP XTPa are made for different velocity ranges. Match the bullet to you velocity window. I like the FPs for my lever gun and the HPs for my revolver. See link below for velocity windows:

I have some. I don't hunt with my 357's. I load them with H110 for penitration as SD loads for woods/trail. Haven't finished experimenting with them yet. Don't know if the offer any advantage to cast LSWC's or not. Got em' on sale. I had assumed they were for use in shooting matches. I've had excellent accuracy with XTP's in bigger cartridges, although I don't use many jacketed bullets in my hand loads.

That's just what I needed. Thanks. I think I'll try the FPs in the Marlin 1894.
Yeah, when the Wuhan Virus was kicking in I ran across 125g XTP's at pretty old prices and grabbed 8 boxes to mess with for my 357s. Turned out two of the boxes were FPs. I had to look up what the heck the difference was between the two. I don't own a 357 rifle (wish I did) so I decided to work up a warmish AA7 load for my Ruger LCR that I carry in the winter when I'm XC skiing for the occasional cantankerous moose that show up around here. I don't know why but the moose that do make themselves known in these parts all seem to be in a foul mood.
Off the OP's subject, but I have a bottle of W244 that I would like to use with those 125 XTP's in my 357s. None of my manuals have any data for that powder and 125g jacketed bullets. Do any of you guys have any loads with that combo?
I’m not sure where the XTPs fail (core/jacket separation) but I know it’s less than 1650 fps. If I take any more whitetails with my Freedom Arms, it will only be using the FP version.
By gum, it is indeed online. It's not in their manuals and I was looking through my manuals. This is the first time I've seen where it's online but not in the manual.
Thanks Swifty
