More than 50 years ago, when I was a kid, Dad told me I only needed a .22 rimfire and a .30-06 for hunting. Last year I selected my 30-06 Rem 700 CDL for all my hunting. Umm... It worked... So, do I really need any of the others? Why not sell 'em all except the 30-06, and fund another hunt or two? smile

Well? I dunno. I do LIKE the heck out of several other rifles, but dang... Only tag I didn't fill was cougar, because I didn't see one. Pretty sure the 30-06 could have handled that as well.

I'm thinking that some of us, me included, have several more rifles than needed... Not wanted, needed.

Regards, Guy

Need? What is this "need" you refer to??

Seriously, I guess it depends on which you enjoy most: hunting or messing with rifles...or both.

Yep....more is fun but 30-06 will do it all! Heck, same could be said about the 308 too I guess! Nice animals, what bullet are you using?

I'm headed in that direction, too. I've spent enough time messing with rifles, now I just want to hunt.

Ive owned a few hundred guns in my life but have never bought a 30-06. Its really all one needs to hunt North America game with..
What fun would that be to own a 30-06 ?

You accomplished more in a year of hunting than I have in a lifetime. Looks like some good memories were made.

I agree with you Guy--- DON'T tell my wife.

I simply enjoy different Rifles and different Cartridges. IMO if WE didn't spend the money on firearms
we'd WASTE it on something not important !! <GRIN>

Jerry

ps : Sorry, forgot. Congrats on successful huntS. Love the pix

My Dad said the same thing but he did include a 12 gauge---870 Remington. He was right.

It is my belief that we need rifles in other calibers to PROVE that all we really need is the 30/06. In other words, it is a conundrum I tell you.

I have plenty of rifles for large game, but if there ever is a doubt, I'll each for the old '06 before I reach for the 300 wby.

I agree. But the same case can be made for a lot of cartridges.

Nice pics! If funds limited, it's really just a matter of which you prefer, playing with rifles or hunting. No bad answer, but I'd rather go hunting.

Edit: what bullet(s) did you use?

I think it was Bob Malik who said , " a 30-06 is never a mistake" . He was a very practical man. from jack rabits to grizzleys it works.

165 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip for the elk, black bear, mule deer & pronghorn

200 gr Nosler Partition for the grizzly and wolf

Probably could have done it all just fine with the 180 gr Nosler Partitions, of which I've got several hundred from SPS on sale a while back.

Dad never had a 30-06, but I figured that one out on my own. I did add a .223 varmint rifle back in the early 70's I don't care much for hunting, but do like "messing" with rifles and have a safe full, along with a bunch of long, vintage military Mausers that will not fit ( I keep the bolts in the safe)
