Anyone have any 284 Win pet loads they wouldn't mind sharing? I'm picking one up from a gunsmith friend of mine this week. I have quite a few different Nosler, Hornady, and Speer bullets to work with. Any help is appreciated. Thanks,
bludog

My favorite load is 4350 powder and Hornady 139 grain Spire. This is a wonderful bullet in an equally good cartridge. It was a short fat before all of the short magnum craze.

Ditto on 139's and 140's, I've had good luck with H4350, RL22, and H4831.

The old established load that Bob Hutton published was a 140 nos partition and 57 grs of IMR 4350, velocity was just over 3000 fps.

Velocities from a bolt gun will allow higher loading that published in most manuals. Pressure was established for the model 88 and another model that I cannot remember right now.

120s max loads 3150-3200 with a 24" barrel.

160s " " " 2800 " " " "

My favorite powder is H4350.

I don't have any favorite loads with the bullets that you have on hand but I have two favorite loads, one load uses the discontinued Barnes 140 gr xlc bullet in front of 60 gr of RL22, I am getting 2980 fps out of that load. I also like the Barnes 140 gr ttsx bullet in front of 54 gr of IMR 4831, that load gets 2871 fps. I killed a 150 lb Wild Eurasain boar with that load, one shot instant kill at 150 yards. I get one inch groups with either of the loads. My rifle has been rechambered from 7mm-08 to 284, it has a very long throat, due to magazine restrictions the bullet has to travel about .125 to reach the lands, thats probably why I am not getting as high of a velocity as some other rifles.

Thanks you guys for the replies. I do have Barnes bullets also - 120 TSX, TTSX, 140 TSX, and 150 TSX. This one is a M-70 7-08 rechambered to 284 win. It has a 24" barrel and will allow bullets of about 3.07" to feed easily based on what my buddy is telling me. Looks about like what would work in a 280 Rem should work with this cartridge also. Ought to be fun.

Azshooter,
I hate it when I do the same thing. The other was the semi-auto Winchester 100 the running mate to the 88. I had a friend who had a 100 in .308 and I have two 88's, .243 & .308. He asked me what load I used in my rifle and I gave it to him and his rifle would pull the rim off the cases as it tried to eject the case. This load would produce a slightly flat primer in my rifle, but I think the peak pressure was higher at the gas port of his rifle than factory ammo had at that time, some 30 years ago. About the same time I had a chance to buy a .284 and a .358 in 88's from an older man who was selling a few guns, I did not buy them. I been kicking myself ever since. I thought I had enough 88's at the time, I was wrong.
Good shooting!
Marcus.

3.07" OAL is a good thing. The 2.8" OAL leaves out a lot on bullet selection. The 145 Speer wroks well with the shorter OAL. This should give you some ideas on loads for your .284

Maxish H4350 under 120 B'Tips as well as either of the Hornady 154s have worked well for me.

BTW, my 284 is long throated with a C.O.L of 3.040"

good shooting to ya.

I see a lot of H4350 recommended. 284LUVR is the velocity you're getting with the 120 BT giving you any blowups? I like that bullet a lot in my wife's 7-08, just a little leary of running them up to 3250-ish. Thanks.

I wouldn't worry about the 120 nosler bt blowing up. I used to crank them up to close to 3600 with my 7 mag and never had a problem. A few coues wt had issues though.

bludog No problem out of either of my rifles using the 120B'Tip out of my 20 inch Browning at 3100 (chronyed). Haven't chronyed my rechambered Rem. 7600 but would guess at the same or better velocity.

So far all my shots have been in the heart area with a few straight through the lungs.Dead deer without too much mess.

120BT,WLR,52.5gr RL15, 3.045" oal, 3150fps
160NP,210Match,54.5gr IMR4350,2.970" oal, 2850 fps.

I built a pair of 284's for my boys when they reached hunting age, and the load I used was 55 grains of RL-19 and a Speer 145 grain Hot Core.

In my 284 Win I have a couple pet loads, but a lot of good loads.

With the Nos 120BT I use 51.5gr of R15.
With the Nos 160NP I use 55gr of R17.

They will cover most any need you have in perforance.

As always, work up loads in a safe manner in your gun.
