Great site. This will be my first wildcat so bear with some of my questions please. I am looking for information on the 220 Howell. Where can I find information on this wildcat both how to form it and reloading data, books or websites? I would also like some information on the twist and length this wildcat is best in, for 75 grain a-max.

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

1. The .220 Howell is a factory load, not a wildcat.
2. Loaded ammo and factory brass are available ...
3. ... or form from .25-06, .270, .280, '06 cases.
4. Over-all length with 75-grain Hornady A-Max seated 0.555 inch is 2.925 inches.
5. Optimum twist for this bullet is one turn in eight or nine inches.
6. More info at http://www.hunting-rifles.com
7. Optimum powders: Ramshot Magnum, IMR 7828
8. approximate performance with Ramshot Magnum, 26-inch barrel (exact performance in unknown rifle is impossible to predict):
-- 50.0 gr, ~ 3,200 ft/sec, ~ 39,000 lb/sq in.
-- 54.5 gr, ~ 3,600 ft/sec, ~ 52,500 lb/sq in.
-- 54.9 gr, ~ 3,650 ft/sec, ~ 54,000 lb/sq in.

Thank you for clearing up the wildcat expression. I think I may want to form my own brass because AHR is a little high on the price, and I have a wealth of 270 brass and a maybe a source of 25-06 brass. What are the steps to form the Howell from the 270 or 25-06? How difficult is it to form the brass from 270 brass, and the steps needed? This will be my attempt at the case conversion process so please bear with me.

1. Anneal shoulder and upper body.
2. Shove outer shoulder back with 8x57mm Mauser sizer die.
3. Shove more shoulder back with 7x57mm Mauser sizer die, backed-off [by amount I don't recall exactly].
4. Shove more shoulder back with .257 Roberts sizer die, backed-off [by amount necessary)
5. Size in .220 Howell sizer.
6. Trim to 2.400 inches and deburr mouth.
7. Anneal neck and shoulder.

Here's an idea of the .220 Howell's performance -- its trajectory with the 75-grain A-Max at 3,550 ft/sec muzzle velocity (red), compared with the trajectory of the .220 Swift 50-grain factory load at 3,780 ft/sec (green), with both sighted-in at 250 yards:

Please consider also the fact that the above .220 Howell load develops a lower peak pressure than the above .220 Swift load, therefore won't erode the barrel as soon as the .220 Swift load will. Also that both bullets reach the same down-range velocity at about 180-190 yards, and from there on out, the .220 Howell's 75-grain A-Max is increasingly faster than the Swift's 50-grain. (Both bullets are Hornadys, IIRC.)
