Is there a good way to make a gloss finished stock less shiny? I tried using rubbing compound as describied in Shooting Times but must have done it wrong because it is now shinier than before. I don't want to remove the finish, just make it not so shiny.
Thanks.

i've had good success with rottenstone. it's basically a grit that scratches the surface (very finely) and dulls it somewhat.

I dulled the finish on a new 1100 this summer so I know you can do a decent job on a polyurethane finish. I just used #3 pumice w/oil and a felt pad. Rub along the grain and it will take the shine right off of it.
A conventional beeswax paste or a light finish rubbing compound will put the shine back into it though. Use furniture polish not wax.

Rottenstone on a felt rag dipped in mineral oil will do it fast and easy. Use very long strokes with the grain and lots of overlap. If you try to do it in small areas, especially if you use a circular motion, and you will spend the rest of your life trying to make it uniform...

A fine cut scotch brite pad. With the poly or epoxy finishes it might take a little longer to get the desired effect since the finish is so hard. I finish my military rifles with tung oil varnish and take off the shine with the scotch brite pads. Doing the groves between the checkering will probably be the hardest part if you want it to look consistant. kwg
