I have a Ruger 77 Sporter, stainless/laminated. I was wondering about checkering on laminated stocks. Is is possible? Will it hold up? Can laminated stocks be stipled, like some of the target stocks? Any suggestions on how the make it more non slip?

Checkering generally does not hold up well on laminated stuff because the short little pieces of wood sticking out at wierd angles get rubbed off too easily. Stippling might work, though I have never stippled one. Strangely, I had thought of that. It could be mixed with clear finish and applied...it gets me thinking....

Also the glue would be hell on your checker tools. At least laoding them up.

The late Finn Aagaard mixed creek sand with epoxy and reported that it did very well. This was on a synthetic stock but I've thought about doing the same thing on my Savage Boyds stock.

bchannell, I have a Remington M700 Mtn LSS, it came from the factory with cut checkering(my guess) that has held up very well. The only thing I can say about this rifle is that the checkering lines appear to be cut at a different angle, perhaps to give them a "wider" base to each point. The checkering appears to grab onto fabrics more, I noticed when carrying this rifle it picks up fibers from the clothing I happen to be wearing at the time and takes on a fuzzy appearance. A quick and easy solution would be to apply skateboard tape. A lot of pistol shooters do this on the frontstrap on their pistols. If you don't like it you can always remove it with no harm done.
