Greetings,
Have an issue which has me scratching my head. Took apart a non T/D Model 99 for cleaning. Removed the forearm which is stamped last 4 of S/N. It is held in place by one screw threaded into the stud. Also removed the stock by loosening the long screw and washer.
All went well during reassembly except for reinstalling the forearm. The initial forearm install goes part way into the barrel, but the other parts aren’t lining up and appear short as follows:
1) The forearm hole won’t line up with the barrel stud. 2) The forearm cutout wont line up with the barrel boss (not sure if that is the correct name).
Given the fit was perfect before disassembly and how simple reassembly should be, really interested in what happened since wood “breathes” and how to fix without making “alterations”.
I don’t see any way to make fitment adjustments and I’m hoping someone might have experience and/or thoughts on my issue.
PS: I’m not an expert, but have performed this process before without issue.

just guessing but the forearm gained weight while off the rifle. what is your humidity and how long was the forearm off, unrestrained by the action?

Sounds like the forearm isn't sliding all the way into the front of the receiver to me. Or that it's just a really tight fit. Run into this once or twice, but it's very uncommon. Check front of receiver, end of forearm, barrel channel for obstructions is all I can think of.

The forearm has been off the barrel for a week plus. Humidity is around 50%. If weight gain is the cause, what can be done to help the forearm lose weight?
From what I can see, everything looks “factory”. The forearm seats perfectly into the bottom of barrel channel, but will check more closely for obstructions on front of receiver, end of forearm or barrel channel.
Also testing if shims change the forearm position at the barrel boss and/or barrel lug. Might also help determine if there’s an obstruction.

Shouldn't a takedown have a latch, not a screw?
*Sorry, misread.

I would also make sure the barrel stud has not moved sidewise a bit, though your reference to a barrel boss makes it sound like an F which has the stud soldered in place.
At 50%, I don't think humidity is your problem. I have had a few that came apart willingly, but had to be nudged (ever so gently so as not to remove material) back into place.

@Calhoun, @deerstalker, @missedbycracky: Appreciate the suggestions which served as a stopping point. A little Rodico, magnification and patience lead to understanding the correct way to wiggle it back into place. For the heck of it, weighed the forearm each day (7.5 ounces). Strange considering how many times I’ve caught it late night snacking. Not an F, a PE.
Was hoping to make it out west for the shindig, but chances are fading like a Bird jumper. Will try and take some pics after cleaning another PE.
Also have another question about PE variations, but will post separately when time permits.
Thanks everyone!
PS: @Fireball2: Np.
