I bought the first Leupy VariX 2.5x8 I ever saw back in 1977 and used it for about 20 years on a M70 7RM in "Conetrol low rings". The front and rear of the scope are small enough it will clear the barrel and bolt with the "lowest" ring height of most mount systems.

However, you may or may not want to squirm your cheek that low into the stock.

For me, in general when I get a rifle into shooting position my eye is automatically in alignment with the scope barrel most often with medium height rings. It depends on stock and face shapes!
