Haven't been hearing any gobbling. Seein birds, no gobbles. For 3 weeks.

Got out of the car Sat morning at 6:00 sharp and heard a strong gobble. Walked up the path to the pasture corner, and wham one gobbles right over my head. Still dark, so kept going. Got the decoys set up, 2 hens and the funky chicken jake. 2 or 3 birds were sounding off by then. I hit a few yelps, not much. A couple clucks later got a response. I shut up and waited. A hen flew down close by and came into the decoys. Another joined her. I could tell one of the gobblers was on the ground. About 15 mins later saw him out of the corner of my eye, entering the pasture from my left. With two more hens in tow. Now I got 5 sets of eyes out there milling around in the decoys. Knowing that any minute one of the girls could lead him out of there, decided to take the shot. I by this time had slid down hill from the base of the tree, and was pretty much lying on my back. Put the bead on the edge of the feathers and pulled the gun at the shot. Hit him lower and further back than intended, but he went right down and never got up. Must have cut his spine. The breast meat was good and I didn't shoot the beard off like the last one. 6:30 and it was over.
