Most of the farmers down in the valley (arkansas valley - pueblo, through la junta) are leasing their lands. But you will be hard pressed to find any that aren't in multi-year deals.

It's expensive for good access along the river. Usually the lease is combo for ducks/geese/turkeys and deer. I can't comment on the cost per acre but $2,000 for a small lease is on the low side for marginal access.

If you have money the leases are game rich, and so is the cost.

There are zero to no farmers down there who give strangers free access. Those days are long gone. I wish you well in your quest, but huntsonora's suggestion of going for mule deer on public land is a much better idea.
