Balance and the fact they swing and move better than shorter on clay targets, would be my first thought.
Addition: Short barrels start quick, but also stop quick. OK on snap shots. Not so OK on crossers, especially those with a little distance. Longer, with a little weight forward will smooth out the follow through.
