I tried to instill the tradition of carrying a pocket knife, too, but it seems they will be expelled if they bring such a deadly weapon to school.
If they are here on the ranch they wear a belt, carry a pocket knife, wear closed-toe shoes or boots and a hat.
There's at least one rifle within reach of anyone when we're out and about (of course I'm always packing a pistola) in case we run across something that needs killing, a bottle of water for everyone, and no damned cell phones allowed out of a pocket unless it's to answer a call from the house telling us it's time to eat.
We have a great time.
