I'm sure there were plenty of materials in a factory at the turn of the 20th century that would, if mixed together, go boom. Especially if the mixing involved chemicals. But it is interesting that Savage offered an award, suggesting that they thought something foul, deliberate, derilic or neglagent had happened.
