That article is all over the place. They just could not resist taking a swipe at hunters from the 1900's (if they were in fact hunters and not poachers). They did not mention that in the last drought large numbers of other animals died from drinking water contaminated by high concentrations of hippo.

The money the part could have made from selling tags to outfitters to cull these animals could have gone to anti-poaching efforts. The media just can not bring themselves to point out how hunters can and do help.
