Roosevelts are huge--bulls weigh from 700 to 1,100 pounds. That's roughly 20% bigger than a Rocky Mountain bull, about twice the size of Tule bull, and slightly smaller than a Quarter Horse. I don't think he wanted to wound anything where it could escape into acres of thick, soaking wet brush in the rain. I hit my bull on the edge of a very steep, nasty, brush-filled draw. A 50-yard death run would have taken him to the bottom of it and made meat recovery far tougher than it was.

And I definitely respect his choice. He is a savvy shooter and has taken a lot of Rocky Mountain elk in the mountain West. I believe that he might have tried (and scored) with a 300 magnum.

I just think that he added up all of these factors and decided not to shoot, which must have been a tough call.

Thanks for the response.

About what I figured.
