I would venture to say that the reason for David's murder was mainly jealousy. People with low self esteem, especially young people, can hold a mighty grudge against peers who are high achievers. Drugs of course are just a symptom of the low self esteem and probably enable someone to perform a heinous act that they wouldn't have had the stomach for otherwise.
