I have been cleaning and studying pre 64 model 70 rifles and their markings. And have found there are almost NO universal markings! I love em but this is getting very frustrating to try and authenticate them. Here are some examples: 1946 in 220 swift. Says 220S under barrel, no date under receiver. 1952 in 270. Says 270 under barrel. 1953 SG in 300HH. Says 300 under barrel and stamped 53 under receiver. 1955 FWT in 3006. Says 3006 under barrel but has a 3 and a 2 stamped near lug?? 1958 in 270 has 270 stamped under barrel. 1960 Alaskan in 338. Has a proof mark under barrel and 458 stamped on lug. And last is a 1963 FWT Westerner in 264. Nothing under barrel and 458 stamped on lug. Best book I have seen is Roger Rule's. Has anyone else figured out some sort of pattern for these wonderful rifles, a rule of thumb? Or is it impossible?
