TopGun- While a good idea in theory, I'd rather not risk damaging it. Thanks to the excellent advice from GPA I called Canal St. and found out that they did at one time make some of that model with the bone scales. After fondling it for several cumulative hours and examining it VERY carefully, I am certain that it is bone. After the discussion with Canal St. I am almost as certain that it came from the factory that way. Just as a side note- my father got a brown 1560T Old Timer AND this one for his birthday last month. Now he has one to carry again and one to put away for my son to inherit
