CAP-AUX-MEULES, Que. Anti-sealing protesters are gearing up to document the annual East Coast seal hunt that begins Monday.

Phil Jenkins, a spokesman for the federal Fisheries Department, says the hunt will start in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence around Quebec's Iles de la Madeleine.

Only about 30 per cent of this year's 280,000 harp seal quota will be taken in the gulf, while the rest will go to the major hunt off Newfoundland's northern coast.

Roger Simon, DFO's area director for the Iles de la Madeleine, says ice carrying the seals has been pushed to shore, meaning sealers will be able to start the hunt on land rather than heading immediately into the gulf.

Meanwhile, a ceremony was planned for Cap-aux-Meules, Que., on Sunday in memory of sailors and sealers who've died, including the four sealers aboard L'Acadien II.

The small boat capsized off Cape Breton last March 29 while under tow by a coast guard icebreaker.

With 280,000 seals being alloted - you KNOW they aren't endangered! Their diet - the east-coast cod on the other hand...

Support the sensible use of wildlife - support hunting - support tradition - and support people still trying to earn an honest living! Buy something made of sealskin! Please - don't let the "anti's" - brainwash your children!

Personally speaking - if it's made of sealskin - I'll buy it!
