I have shot cast bullets in a .222 Remington , which is mighty similar to your .223. The shooting was from a Remington 788 woth a 24 inch barrel.

The mold is an old single cavity Lyman...a spitzer, 49 grain gaschecked bullet (224450)which I had originally thought would perform poorly. However:

Reloader 7 was my favorite. 12 grains gave me .875 MOA, 1.25 MOA, and 2.0 MOA in three different tries with 10 shots at 100 yards (using a 6 power scope). My best load for jacketed was .625 MOA. 13 grains was similar to the 12.

Using Unique, I managed 5.0 grains to shoot 1.75 MOA and 2.375 MOA in ten round clusters.

4759 was the worst, getting nothing better than 3 inches, and often 6 inches.

I never did measure the velocity. I am assuming that the bullet was travelling around 1600 fps...the usual "most accurate" velocity for a cast bullet from a rifle. I would think that a Loverin design bullet might be a tad more accurate...and weighing no more than 55 grains.

Good luck. Now you have whetted my appetite...I will have to re-shoot that rifle.
