In my experience, the Savage (a Stevens 200 .270 in my case)will probably shoot better out of the box. (The 200 needed a trigger job) The Ruger (Mine is a KM77 mk II in .30-06) can shoot very well after some break-in and maybe a little tuning.

But I also consider resale of rifles- Savages are often thought of as cheap rifles, while I think the Ruger is less so. If one of these 2 does not work out, and you choose to sell it, you'll lose less on the Ruger. If the Ruger costs less, I think it's the better value.
