Try cycling the key a few times before you try to start it. On my dakota, it has a check valve out. The fuel pump runs for a bit when you turn the key on, but if the check valve is out, it isn't enough to pressurize the fuel system. If I cycle the key 5 or 6 times, it pops right off. The check valve is part of a $250 fuel module that sits inside the gas tank.
