If I decided to go another route on the M70 SA, other than 284 Winchester, I'd go 257 Roberts or 6mm remington. Probably AI both.
Oops! See in the OP that cow elk is on the potential kill list. I'd feel obligated to leave AS IS! The .308 can still be fun. Heck, what's more fun than a cartridge that seems to shoot well out of everything and at most available bullet weights??
There's a lot of goodness in 165gr Accubonds, 165gr GameKings, and 150gr TTSXs. The list goes on and on!
