.223 and 5.56 is illegal lots of places, unfortunately, VA being one of them. I'd think 6.8 would be just fine for a hunting rifle. I'm no expert, but I think 6.8 SPC is similar to a .270 Win round, which has put a lot of deer on the dinner table.
Or you could buy a .308. Just sayin'.
